Has anyone removed the "tube" roof rails on a 2004 DII?

I saw another post a few days ago on a guy who just didn't like them, but i can find it...if you are reading this and you DO remove your tube rails -- PLEASE take a picture of the roof holes!!! A measurement would be great too.

I want to remove my rails and plug the holes (with the intention of adding a "low" SD rack--whether I have to chop my SD high rack, or i find a SD low rack)...FYI - i have read the "tech" write-up for removing the roof rails but I was told the 2004 DII roof/holes were different...and I need to know what size plugs to order!

Thanks,

Mack

If you want to sell your round tube rails let me know - i would like to swap out the skinny ones on my 01 - Looks like you are local to me also...

I would consider it if all goes well....but i have been told the roofline on the 04 DII is slightly "different" than the earlier models...not sure they would fit properly on your roof...by i dunno. well just have to see.

thanks,

the later roofs have a recess for the larger bars, u would have to swap roofs to use them.

Ha - well ok then - I had heard from others that this swap was doable - I guess not.

Roof swaps seem like a little more work than I was up for....

DCP 7299L is a blanking plug which is generic, not vehicle specific, whether or not it fits the holes in an 04 is hear say.

There is a blanking plug that is associated with the roof rails, again, how well they work, or what their intended use is, who knows. They are 3 and 5 dollars respectively.

but is the hole 6" long like it seems to be??

No, it is not. I took the roof tubes/rails off of my '04 last weekend. The same plugs from Steele mentioned in Blue's article work for the '04 D2. [Part # 35-0517-45, 1-3/8" plugs with a 1-3/4" cap] Also, the same 13mm nut attaches the '04 tubes to the roof.

The '04 roof is no different from the older D2 roof. Only the rail is different.

What did you use to plug the rear holes on the 2004 DII? They aren't really even holes, they are more like troughs.

Again, the roof is no different from the pre-2004 models. The rear hole looks exactly like your D1 and exactly like the shot I posted of the front hole. The tube has a flat section which interfaces with the roof, it is NOT round.
