A lesson learned....Stay away from Platinum Motorsports in KY

Let start off by saying some of you may burn me for this post but, I feel it's important to tell this story, so that people that have a Rover or are in the market for their first don't get screwed the way I did.

Earlier this year I began searching for my first Rover. My main quest was to find a Discovery 2. I had done all of the research and had looked at probably 5 or more. I couldn't find one I could settle on and ended up finding a nice looking Discovery 1 at Platinum Motorsports in Lagrange, KY.

When I test drove the vehicle the ABS light would not go off. Daryl, the guy showing the vehicle to me really seemed like a true enthusiast, which gave me a good vibe about the place. I decided to pull the trigger on the Disco and was told that the ABS would be fixed before I picked it up. He was sure it was just a "gap" issue. Which after a little research I found that it's possible for that to happen. I picked the car up the next day and the light was still on, I was told that since it was so cold maybe it would take a couple of days to go off and if it didn't I could bring it back and he'd replace the sensor. Just like he said the light started to go off and I was under the impression that everything was good.

A couple of weeks later the light came on and stayed on. The ABS system also started engaging under light braking as well. I called Platinum Motorsports and Daryl told me to bring it back and they'd fix it. So, later that week I dropped it off to be fixed. A week went by and I gave them a buzz, they told me the sensor was on it's way and it'd be a few days more. A few days went by and no Disco, I called back again and there "had been a delay" with the shipping and it would take another day, I expressed my gratitude for them keeping their word and the next week I finally got my Disco back. Let me be clear that I'm not the type to nag and complain about that taking longer than usual. I merely called a couple of times just for updates. I had another car at the time, although it was a pain to cram 3 kinds into (S197 Mustang), it got me through.

Now, here is where my inexperience with the Discovery 1 and Land Rovers as a whole came into play. With the majority of my research being geared towards a D2, and being a domestic gearhead, a light illuminated on the dash to me was a bad thing. When I picked up my Disco the ABS light was off, from the moment of starting, driving, and stopping. I incorrectly assumed that the problem was resolved. Go ahead and take your shots, I deserve it on that one.

Well, last week I took a different freeway home, one that can get crowded at rush hour. As you have seen many times people tend to drive like idiots in rush hour traffic and I found myself in an emergency braking situation when someone pulled into my free flowing lane without looking. The brakes locked up and I went into a skid. Luckily I didn't panic and let out and went back into the brake pedal and stopped with no accident.

Fortunately, I hadn't found myself in an emergency braking situation until then. I was even more lucky to NOT have my kids in the car.

Over the weekend I took to the task of figuring out what was going on. After looking into ABS problems with the D1, I seen that the light should be on at every start. This threw the red flag immediately. I checked the fuses first and all were good. Then I had a gut feeling to check and see if the bulb was even in the cluster anymore. Here is was I found......

The empty hole you see circled is where the ABS light bulb should be. They didn't fix anything, just pulled the bulb and gave it back to me.

Now, let me be clear in saying that I fully understand that my Discovery was sold to me AS IS. The agreement we had to fix the ABS was merely verbal. I put trust in the fact that Daryl and Nathan at Platinum were enthusiasts and wouldn't try and screw me over. I was wrong.

What has been the most frustrating thing about this is, when I bought the Discovery, they knew I had kids. One of those kids being a 2 month old baby. I made it very clear I was buying the Disco to have a unique car to haul them around in. Why the hell would you put children in danger??!! They knew the ABS was nonfunctional and still gave it back to me knowing that I would be driving with young children in the car. What kind of sorry excuses for humans do that??

Moral of the story here is, bring an enthusiast with you when looking at Rovers. If you have an agreement to get something fixed, get it in writing, no matter how good of a vibe you're getting. Oh and stay away from Platinum Motorsports, apparently a few bucks saved on an ABS sensor is way more important than the lives of an 8-year-old, 4-year-old, and 2 month old baby.

Oh, snap. That's not cool.

I sure hope they just pulled it and didn't screw it all the way in, causing it to accidentally fall (well, negligently, really). Look around in there just to be sure.

It's one hell of a dickish move to pull a light; especially on a safety system. Get a code reader out there ASAP to capture anything in memory.

Just be fairly certain whether or not it was a deliberate pull. It's a nasty world out there, but you'll rarely come across someone in this country who will actually pull a light on a customer vehicle to hide a problem with a safety system.

Now, on his own car, it's a different story, but a customer car? That's no good at all.

Just look for a bulb and pull the codes to be sure.

Cheers,

Kennith

I feel bad for you - somebody had to tell you that a shining ABS light in a D1 is a good thing, meaning ABS is _likely_ not working.
The shop sucks, no doubt about it.

The code reader advice seems to come up everywhere I post this. I'm definitely going to invest in one. I've posted this on multiple forums. I may not have the documentation to make a legal retaliation, but I sure as hell am going to let the community know what type of folks they are and to stay away.

The shop should have just been straightforward with you and not said they fixed it when they didn't. Shame on them for that.

That said, keeping a 20 year old ABS system functioning properly is an uphill battle. Many on here, myself included, have taken measures to disable the ABS altogether. We'd rather have the predictability of non-ABS vs relying on ABS and never knowing when it won't work(at the worst possible time).
The problem with the ABS system is that the light could be off and no CEL and it could still malfunction at the worst time.
I have completely removed the ABS modulator, fuse, and rear wheel ABS rings from my '98 and it NEVER threw a CEL. So unless your CEL is illuminated I wouldn't expect to retrieve any codes related to the ABS light being on.

You kind of have to accept the vehicle for what it is. Hell, the airbags are supposed to be inspected after 10 years. We could all be driving around with no airbags for all we know.

I bought my rover from Nathan in 08 I felt like he cheated me fair. I knew there was an issue with the inside alarm thingy (sensor for inside air movement was missing), but didn't care as I'm using it as a work truck not a family car. The battery was bad when I test drove it and as promised he did replace it with a new battery when I picked it up albeit a small one, but it worked well for it's expected life time. I bought a front bumper from him a few years back and it has worked well for me. I haven't tested it by trying to pull hell from it's foundation yet but it has pulled many tress out of the woods to be cut for fire wood.

All this is a long way of saying I would probably buy something from Nathan again but I will definitely look things over much closer now. Platinum Motorsports is a used car lot and there are stereotypes for a reason.

Someone is bound to have one for a D1 to lend, if it needs some special feature to read braking codes.

I can never remember what needs what anymore.

God I love using my DII for that sort of thing. It's total overkill, but it's so much fun. I've been letting a property grow up just in case I get better by the winter. I'll be out there having a blast. I hope it snows.

The pines aren't big (it's all former tree-farm out here), but there are a lot of them. It should have been bush-hogged five years ago, but that's okay.

I'd go talk face to face and let him know that pulling the bulb is conspiracy to commit murder. Then demand he do what he said he would which was fix it in the first place.

Hello all,

My name is Darrell, and I'm with Platinum Motor Sports. Fortunately I have a few friends in the Land Rover world that keep me in the know as I was not registered on any Land Rover forums. Until now as I have become aware that it needs to now happen to save my character as not only an enthusiast of Land Rovers but a human being.

Let me start of by sincerely apologizing for this happening to you as it was actually not myself or Nathan that did the work on your abs system. Although we are responsible and are quite aware of that and do take full responsibility for it. I remember you quite clearly. So please read on and hopefully I can regain your trust as a customer but even more important to myself and Nathan, a fellow enthusiast as I explain our current situation.

I have done all of the mechanic work here at Platinum since about 2010 until about 2 years ago when I thought I would venture to California. So since I was leaving Nathan and I put a search out for mechanics to take my place. We found someone and his name is Brad. I didnt stay in California long as I realized I like being here and I have an obsession with Land Rovers. So Nathan asked me to come back and help him with other aspects of the business not being a mechanic as it can be exhausting but selling cars and marketing bumpers and off road accessories. Plus we already had a new mechanic, Brad.

So Ill try to keep this short and to the point. Brad is no longer with us as of spring of this year because of well let me just name a few of the things I have had to redo for our customers free of charge to regain their trust. As I would happily do for you if you would have called and yelled at me. As you have probably guessed I am now back to doing all of the mechanic work and proud to be doing so along with all of the other things I am now involved in here. A few things that our previous mechanic did: I found a rag under an intake manifold gasket that he left in there, I have found intake manifold gaskets with no end seals, coil packs on D2's not bolted down, had to redo a rear main seal that he f**ked up on an engine job, About to rebuld an engine with top hat liners that he put together wrong, we had a customer while he still worked here that he installed a rear diff in an LR3 and forgot to torque the axle nuts and the customer was driving down the road with HIS kids when the rear of the truck started to sway back and forth on the road so the customer took it to another Land Rover repair shop to get it fixed and sent us the bill which Brad was forced to pay and didn't understand why he had to pay it. I personally went to the shop to inspect the damage. Embarrassing but I represent Platinum Motor Sports and took responsibility for it and his incompetent a**. And not to mention our favorite slip up of not torquing lug nuts. And now your D1.

But just so I'm clear I don't want you or anybody else to think that I'm saying that I'm not responsible, I fully accept full responsibility for your negative experience. I should have checked his work. And I wish I would have. My mother has a 93 Range Rover LWB and she had tires rotated somewhere and they only hand tightened the lugs on one wheel. She almost had a wreck. I wanted to go down there and strangle somebody. But instead I just rotate her tires now. Instead of Brad F*cking up customer cars we decided that I would just bust my a** and do it all myself. In other words what I'm saying is I am now doing all of the Mechanic work here and I work on all Land Rovers as if they were my mothers. I understand your feeling of your Rover being tainted and I would like nothing more than to untaint it. I would love to help you in any way possible if you just contact me. If not, I understand. But I just want you to know that I deeply apologize. I communicated with you on the phone but unfortunately did not do the work. It was a simple task and Brad told me all was good so I was just happy to get your truck back to you.

If I never see you again I hope that you enjoy your Land Rover as I enjoy mine as well as fixing peoples Land Rovers so we can keep them alive and on the road and members of our families full of adventures and memories. And if it gives you or anybody else any peace of mind, if I ever see Brad I'm going to personally ring his neck for all of the agony he has put me through over the past months and I will ring his neck a second time just for you. This will never happen again.

personally I would have simply stated the mechanic was no longer with you. its going to open you up for more bashing, with this crowd, regarding why you kept him on after the first several mistakes.

Side note, do you have a brother named Darryl?

I bought my Lr3 from Nathan after being referred by a fellow dweb member. It was not as described. I'll leave it at that and say I will never buy another rover without seeing in person first.
