I?m looking to buy an SD rack for my 04 DII. Went camping last weekend with my two kids (sans wife) and realize, in an ideal world, I need more storage space. I am in Portland, ME and am looking for something as close to here as possible. Looking to pay between $600 > 800. Price would depend on condition, flooring, etc. Not interested in a D1 rack, though. Let me know if you have anything that fits the bill. Thanks.

Don't shoot the idea but the RR will kill off whats left of your mpg. If only a little space is needed, get one of those receiver mounted carriers. My bias is a M416 or Sankey.....

I use a Yakima Load Warrior roof rack on my D1. Just came back from a 400-mile road trip and my fuel economy was 16+ mpg. This on slightly larger than stock AT tires and 1" suspension lift. I can fit 2 Pelican cases (1600 and 1550) plus two 30-liter drybags plus 2 camp chairs in that roof basket. It's not a lot, but it's enough to keep the pile of gear in my load space low enough so I can see out the back window.

The SD rack is about 100 pounds empty. If you need to carry that much stuff up top there is no substitute, but as the old saying goes - gear expands to fill space. If you can get away with something smaller you'll keep your weight down. Then again, a SD rack looks cooler than a Yakima, but is also a fair bit pricier (even used). Ultimately you need to decide what your priorities are and go with a solution that best meets those needs.

In the summer I usually use the receiver for the bike carrier, unfortunately.

These are all valid points. I have been going back and forth for awhile and had just been using the Thule box from my LC. There are just enough times during the year where I have said to myself, ?damn this would easier if I had a rack and could just get up there.? Even if it is just going to the beach with the kids and their friends. I do fully admit that I also think it looks cool so, even if it is just subconsciously, that is playing a part. The other part is I have an SE7, so the loadspace is already compromised and I hate not being able to see out of the back windshield. And unfortunately we also usually end up using the jump seats when we get to wherever we are going.
