Transfer Case Installation Estimate

I will be purchasing a locking TC from a board member soon, and had a question on costs associated with install.

If I remove the console and supply the TC and associated linkage, oil, output shaft seals and nylocks, the shop will do the remove, replace, and supply the other gaskets for $900 and change.

Does this sound like a fair price?

This is a local independent Land Rover shop that is very knowledgable and run by a couple good guys.

My other choice would be to do the swap myself on the garage floor. Problem is that this is my only four-wheeled mode of transportation, it's winter, and these things always take me much longer than expected.

You and a buddy could do it in an afternoon. The hard part is the TC weighs a ton and does not lend itself to lifting easily. The bottom isn't flat so it doesn't like to stay level on a flat surface. You'll need a transmission jack and some pieces of wood to wedge under the TC to keep it level while lifting it into place. I've done it myself on my driveway, but an extra set of hands would help.

$900 is a pretty fair price. I would expect the shop labor to be between 7 and 14 hours depending on what else is replaced at the time.

It is a shitty job to do on the floor unless your truck doesn't leak and isn't rusty.

I've decided to prep the console/interior the best I can and have the shop take care of the heavy lifting. Will is sending the TC to them directly.

If nothing else, they have always stopped what they were doing to offer advise and suggestions in the past, and they are good people.

Thanks all for the suggestions/opinions.

The transfercase cradle thats shown in the rave bolted to a harbor freight trans jack makes this job a breeze, other than pulling the interior apart. Its hell to reinstall using blocks of wood to get the angle right

Why are you taking the console apart? There isn't anything that has to be done from the top from what I remember (at least on a DII).

To get to the cdl shifter bolt. Maybe Im doing it wrong, but I dont think it can be done from the ground. Maybe series 2 are different

Its been a long time since I've had one off, but it should be just a nut that you can reach from the bottom. On an 04 DII with CDL I think you can just pop the pins off of the cables. I know I've done a bunch of them and I just don't recall ever doing anything from the top.

I dont think you could even lower the transmission and trans case off the mounts without shattering the console, and I think youd have to lower it to undo the linkage

D2s are different Im talking d1

I replaced the transmission on my wife's old D1 a few years ago. I only remember removing the knob off of the leaver. If you put it in low range I think it clears the console.
