That's too high if it's their only Defender offering; too high by about $10,000-$13,000 in my mind.

I did, however, see mention somewhere of a Defender Sport coming down the line, but it'll need to show up a hell of a lot sooner if that's the Defender's price.

Cheers,

Might not be too high. I have always been reminded of the Aussie saying about a Land Rover and a Toyota in the bush. I have always liked older Land Cruisers, so for the heck of of it, I decided to look up a land cruiser. This is what I found;
Starting at 85 grand! That's not a Lexus, it's a Toyota! and I don't even like the styling. So either I am stuck in the past or their is a good reason that I am missing for these prices. The defender just got a lot more affordable.

I don't trust Australians, in that regard. They're singularly responsible for more off-pavement "overland" snake oil than any other nation.

I was in one of those Land Cruisers not too long ago. They've got a lot of equipment that's convenient, and a more simple interface in general than modern Land Rovers. They do feel better than other Toyota models, but fuck Toyota. They pissed me off with the 4runner and Tacoma.

Now, I wouldn't say the Land Cruiser is an $85,000 car, but it's probably a $60,000 car. I don't find it as impressive as others do. I'd say what you're paying for, there, is a platform that's seen little change for a long time, and they've had time to work out issues. Some of the more late-model alterations don't make any sense to me, but I'm sure it's reliable, at the least.

It doesn't feel cheap inside, anyway. It doesn't feel like a Range Rover, but it doesn't feel cheap.

With those, you've got to buy while the buying is good. They make a certain amount of them per year, and they sell out fast. The nice thing is there really aren't any options of note. Pick your color and get one; so it's not a big deal if there are only three left in the nation when you buy.

So, every Land Cruiser can be described as "loaded", to include a cooler in the center console and all that jazz that normally requires some premium option package. That being the case, every new Land Cruiser can be considered to have been fitted with every package available already.

That's part of where the price comes from, but still... It's tons of profit. They've been making it so damned long now that all the R&D was paid for long ago. You're just paying a price that they may as well have pulled out of thin air.

Over the actual sales counter, the Lexus is essentially the same price, but some of those parts are fucking insanely expensive. I think someone quoted the gauge cluster/infotainment thing as costing near $13,000 to replace new. They may have been exaggerating, but whatever it was, it was stupid expensive.

It's my understanding that Toyota specs for Land Cruisers (and the parts) are for 25 years of use, vs the normal 10. That's what you're paying for in a LC - everything is HD.

Here's another angle from their promotional material, and I think this one is about the most illustrative so far:

56717

You can only get away with so much in that light, so far as a wrap goes.

I don't find that visually offensive, and they've actually circled back around to Land Rover styling. If you really think about the Discovery 1, 2, 3, and 4, for example, it doesn't look like any other vehicle. It doesn't fit any mold at all. Is it a truck? Is it a boat? Is it a car? Is it a tank? It is unique.

Now check out that Defender. What is it?

They've got a lot of cooling to expose, though. I don't know where they're going to break up that grille, but it could make or break the look. From the front back, though, I kind of dig what I'm seeing from a styling perspective. I still don't understand the tiny rear door, but whatever. It's a design hallmark.

If the front end looks stupid, fuck it. Just take a page out of their book and go grab some vinyl. :ROFLMAO:

I’d it had those trailer tires and wheels on it I’d buy one.

It’s going to look weird with a white roof, but can you imagine all the orange ones with black roofs they’ll have at dealers?

Well, got some good news for you....

JLRNA is bringing back the Dealer Trek Series in 2020 with the new Defender. If you're not familiar, it was a Camel Trophy inspired vehicle competition bt it's 150+ North American dealers. Dealers would choose teams of 2 or 3 guys to compete. All in all, pretty rad.

We just got word of this today at the dealership. Sounds like it will be next summer.

this thing doesnt look as bad now that it's wrapped a little tighter...and the body seems more lifted than in most of the previous PR. I'm holding out for some sort of longevity award....after all these things I have owned and kept going ( tried to keep going..lol) it would seem logical that LR would reward me with the new flagship model......

and then I woke up

If I remember correctly, the Trek events were for dealership employees only.

I don't know. I thought that was the case, but last time they did it I was contacted by a number of dealerships to participate. Maybe they intended to put me on the payroll passing ratchets or mopping floors long enough to pass muster?

It didn't look that interesting, though, and it was a bit too publicized for my personal taste at the time. I wanted to do the Camel Trophy, but it ended right when I was done prepping. Then the G4 came about, and I trained, but... I mean, let's face it. The people riding those bikes had been doing it for decades.

I'm all about learning from getting my ass kicked, but there's a point at which it's so sudden and thorough that it's just a beating for no reason whatsoever. :ROFLMAO:

TBH, I don't really know much about the events, but the people I know that participated worked for dealerships.

I remember seeing some pictures of a course with some curving side slope. There was a post at the top, and they tied the vehicles to them to drive around it.

Beyond that, I never really knew much about it. I suppose that means it was unsuccessful, or perhaps it was just intended as a moral booster.

Maybe they were just looking for help or something.

Cheers,

Kennith
