Nothing compares to a Rover. It's not even fair to try.

I wouldn't keep the suspension on that XJ, though, and I wouldn't lift it that high when I changed it. I like the condition of the platform itself, there.

This was to cool off your awe about 3-5" of lift on an XJ (and that's about what you need to clear the 32s on one).

There's no awe; there is only what the platform can take and what it can't while remaining an SUV.

That is what it demands. That's the maximum. Any higher, and you've got a four-door diminishing performance return that's flat-out no longer road-worthy.

You've just picked a shape you like and either butchered it or turned it halfway into a buggy. If someone wants a trail rig, go right ahead. Do what must be done to make that happen; but don't think for a second it should be on the highway unless a hell of a lot of welding went on down there and you've re-engineered the entire system.

Just like nearly anything else, it's perfectly capable of going almost anywhere in stock form. I think 30" tires and a 2" lift is where I'd personally want to land, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't run something bigger that just came with the thing and just keep it on beaches and streets until I buy something else.

When it comes to lift, I've always been a "less is more" advocate; and that is the correct position to hold. Anybody argues that, and I'll drop dick right then and there suggesting they don't have enough life and outdoor experience to generate an informed opinion.

That got me banned from another forum three times, actually.

Cheers,

Kennith

And in some cases none is fine. The 110 we had in Brasil had 32” tires as standard. No lift needed. The RRC needed about 2” to clear 235/85-16.

That's the beauty of the Defender. No undoing of compromise made for road-worthiness needed to achieve utility or capability.

Both previous posts are dead-on.

We don't need all the mods we use. We want them. There is a difference, and many people don't quite understand what they're giving up when they make choices.

It could be worse. My driveway has a 1996 XJS, a 2008 Dakota (second worst vehicle I've ever driven), a 1967 Impala, a 2000 Infiniti G20t, and a 2001 DII...

How does an XJ stand out beyond every other Explorer, 4Runner, etc SUV of the 90s? I always thought they looked like a YJ fucked a Winnebago.

Let’s not forget strait axel front. Hard to find a suv in the 90s without ifs

I actually like the grand cherokees from the 90s too. Here is mine from a while back.

C'mon!

Where's the love for Kyd4Lyf with his lifted Cherokee and his front locker?

A true Classic Thread (a HOF thread actually).

We’re close:
2004 Saab 9-3 convertible - Summer car
2004 Audi A4 Avant Quattro - Ski / general use car
1996 D1 SD - Occasion use Rover
1994 RRC LWB - Camp / Holiday Rover

All a nightmare to find a mechanic on which to service them.
