I just picked up a pair of D1 SG Rock Sliders for my XD. I'm curious if there are any instructions or tips I should be aware of before I begin the install. Thanks!

Not specific to $G, mine were custom, but I used a couple of wood spacers, one at each end to get the gaps right. Mine followed the contour of the door panels so they had to look right. Then used floor jacks and jack stands and to adjust and keep them stable. Marked the holes and drilled. I had one hole location that I should have used a right angle drill that I do not have, again, not sure about yours. It was under the rear door right at the hinge location that was tough to get into. Measure twice and cut once, or play around with them before you drill.

I've had the old SG sliders on my D1 for about 18 years now.

Five years ago the lettering was still visible.

The curve to follow the sills was nice on the SG. It's hard to find that nowadays. Everyone just wants to slap a piece of 2x3 boxed steel up there, cap the ends, and call it a day.

I have a set that have been modified. I'm not a big fan of the rear SG bumper because it bolts to the body at the mountings for the bracket that holds the stock mud flaps. So when you bolt to the frame AND the body you transmit noise and harshness from the road. It's just not a good design because of that. The skid plate on them are great. I have a set of rock sliders that have been modified with a tube for protection from trees or what ever. But that part becomes a step for people and the body at the mounting holes for them isn't designed to hold that kind of weight. I also have the stage 2 suspension from SG on a shelf. the rear spring dislocation stuff is a fucking joke in my opinion.

LOL, I am not sure my SG slides follow the sills - or rather the sills follow the SG sliders.
Rubicon took a good care of that, despite all of my pre-trip prep reinforcement work.

If you see one for sale and don't buy it, please please let me know. I need one for the Classic.
It is far superior to ARB on a D1 - tucks in a lot closer and don't rob you from approach angle. It is a lot lighter, too.

Here are two D1s with GDE bumpers - the dark blue one has a winch version:

There are only 3 bumpers I am considering for my D1:

A slimline Rovertym with old school brushbar (What I had on my old D1 that I loved - it's the same one on the red truck in Peter's pic above - it just classic DWeb nostalgia to me)

A RRC GDE ARB bumper - Agree with Peter it just works so well for a D1

An actual Camel Trophy brush guard with Dixon Bate tow jaws and Husky 10 - Obviously this is pure unobtanium but it's just my favorite

I think the GDE bumper is a good, really close, consumer version of the Camel Trophy bumper and the RTE is a spirit of it as well. All 3 of those are fairly difficult to come across for sale too which is why I spend way too much of my free time trolling the internet looking for rare Rover parts.

I really liked the bumper made by Trek Outfitters- it had great lines and tucked in nice with a definite CT look. I don’t know what the quality was line but they really had some good looking stuff
