Modifying a D1 SD rack to fit a D90?

Hi all-

Has anyone tried to modify their SD rack, or seen one modified, to fit a ROW D90? I'm sure the rack is a few inches too wide, and a few inches too long- but can't imagine that it couldn't be done. Or is this just a stupid idea?

Appreciate the feedback. I could- but I have the D1 rack, and there are other things I'd like to spend $1k+ on...I more curious than anything. The G4 Expedition rack looks awfully similar to the D1 rack...

So sell the D1 rack and pony up another $400. You own a D90, don't be a cheapfuck hack.
Not sure that I agree that modifying something qualifies as a cheapfuck hack...seems like a legit way to re-purpose something that I've found very useful on the D1. And easier said than done on selling the D1 rack- I'm in the midwest, and it's a PITA to ship anything east.

Also not sure that owning a D90 means I'm flush with cash- pretty certain most of mine fell out of the holes in the floorboard somewhere...

It's all about proportions to make it look right. My D1 rack only has 4 connection points to the roof rail, this has 5. Then you need to look at the basket size compared to the roof of the vehicle it is going on. The wings for the attachment points could change as long as the basket looks corect. Still seems like a lot of work. Maybe some research would yield a better option.

One of many issues is the different length/ proportions of the roof between the D1 and D90. To retain visual continuity in the rack you'd probably want to remove length from somewhere in the back of the rack and reconnect the pieces at one of the joints by the crossbars/feet. Otherwise you'd have welds in the middle of the tubing sections and that would probably result in the aforementioned hacked together look. One of the aesthetically pleasing features of any SD rack is the symmetry of it and the continuity between the rack and the vehicle. If you shortened the D1 rack for the D90 roof you'd lose a lot of that unless you removed a small amount of length from each section between feet to keep the dimensions in proportion.

I get that you're trying to creatively repurpose what you have for your needs, however I think that for the amount of work required and challenges involved, the most probable outcome is the destruction of a SD rack and a waste of your time. The kick in the roof line doesn't match up between the two vehicles - it's further back on the D1 than on the D90. What you propose may be possible, but it would probably involve so much cutting and welding as to be impractical. Compare this image with the D90 pic posted above:

SD racks aren't exactly lying around these days and I think it would better serve the Greater Rover Good to sell the rack you have and buy something purpose-built for the D90. Don't let a perception of isolation in the midwest deter you from connecting with a buyer. You'd end up with something that meets your needs and someone else gets to keep the SD rack in use on another D1.

To be perfectly honest, this sounds like the type of project I'd take on, struggle through, and come out with something that looks and works OK, but cost me as much money and took a hell of a lot more time than buying the correct rack to begin with.

As I get older, I realize that spending the money and doing it the right way the first time will never disappoint. If the money is a concern, you should consider how much you really value having that rack and prioritize accordingly.

Appreciate the feedback- the difference in the kick in the roof line is greater than I'd thought. And I'll take your advice about passing off the SD rack for the greater Rover good...purpose-built rack for the D90 will be the way to go.

Thanks. What's your rationale?
Well....you have a truck that IF IT IS a NAS D90 is worth a shit ton of money and your quibbling over a grand for a rack that's going to make it look like shit even if you get a D90 rack. After you put the rack on the truck it's not going to fit in a normal garage door. I almost never agree with Dan just on general principle, but this time he nailed it. Your a Chooch.

I’m in St. Louis, how much do you want for the rack? I have 96 D1 SD in the garage just waiting for a local SD rack to pop up!

I have one near Chicago. I'll be looking to sell come spring when I dig it out of my shed.

Creve Coeur is about a 10 minute drive from my place. However, if it doesn’t work out I’d make trip to your place.

I was always told not to argue with idiots because they’ll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience, but you’re a bawfaced numpty if there ever was one.

Terry, the truck and rack are in a garage near Olive/170, so possibly closer or farther from you. I’m debating if I want to sell the entire D1 outright with the rack, but if I decide to sell it separately I’ll reach out to you.
