Keys have always work, just not key fobs now. I will take them in to get reprogrammed as something mucked it up when i pulled power to the battery. If there is a way to get them synced on my own, im all ears as I dont want to have to pay for that if need be.

Also, truck is running now. Had to clean off contacts, now onto replacing wiring.
Try holding the lock and unlock buttons together.

Update - replaced starter (that was a bit of a PITA), power and ground (from battery) with known good ones. It starts, barely, but it started. Hoping the slow start was due to the unit having sat around for a while and the battery having been cranked so many times... I had to shut it off since it was smoking due ot the new power cable touching the header. I will reroute and insulate the power cable and reinstall the heat shield (that little fucker was hard maneuver out of its home).

I will update later today once I have everything rerouted and shielded.

Perfect timing for this thread... my '97 XD is behaving exactly the same. I've pulled the exhaust (another project that was overdue) and am waiting for the starter to show up from England. I figured it's overdue since it's been sluggish on start for a while and the battery and alt are brand new. Wiring looks good and I replaced the ground last OCT with the Alt. Following/joining this thread to join forces. Good luck!
Hello! I replaced the starter, it starts but very slowly. I suspect due to me putting the battery thru its paces trying to get it to start the last 2 days and also because the starter was sitting around.

Im going to reroute the cabling (it started to smoke because it was resting on an exhaust manifold) and i think ill place the battery on a charger to get it back in good health.

WORKING PROBLEM SESOLVED: Replaced ground from battery and power to starter. Cleaned off contacts at all grounding locations. Replaced Starter (and heat shield) with known good used starter from local contact and everything fires up right away, even after driving which i would sometimes have issues with.

All weird electrical stuff has gone away, remote FOBS work again. My rpms still dont work but i get that from the Ultragauge anyways.

Thanks for everyones help!

It is soooo easy to replace brushes and solenoid on a starter. I've just done it on two starters.
All spare parts can be had from this place - https://www.maniacelectricmotors.com/landrover.html
Maybe a starter rebuild tech write-up should be in order.
Im gonna save my old starter and try this out so ill have a space. Also, since youre an admin, do you know how if the site takes money donations?

AND im back. Drove to a park yesterday and upon getting back to truck, all I get is a click. KNocked the starter with a mallet, no go. Battery is getting tested as we speak. New starter from AB is on its way.

Checked to make sure all the accessories and crankshaft spin and they do.
No dimming of lights and a jump does not change the situation

Im hoping the new used (new to me) starter works but otherwise Ill have to get it towed as its not close to me.

clicking at .08
Any other thoughts?

Hello Everyone,
Thanks robby for creating this post as I am having the same exact issue. Drive the car last week without any issues and this week upon trying to starting I get absolutely nothing, no crank, no click, no sound. The only sound I get it the sound of some relay in the passenger footwell. The battery is solid and fully charged and kept on a CTEK trickle charger when not driven.

After reading everything my next step is to disconnect the UltraGauge and the OBDII dongle that I have had connected to the truck for awhile without any issues. Next I will clean all grounds and wires from the battery and starter.

[Q] What size wire gauge did you go with?

Looking forward to hearing how you resolve this as it may shine some much needed light my way.

Thanks

Hi Toran,

I hope yours was as easy as mine. I originally was having issues with the solenoid on my starter. This, along with bad grounds and dirty power cables/terminals didnt allow for a good connection.

What I ended up doing was:
1 - Got new starter (i hear you can fix the solenoid/brushs but i dont know how)
2 - Cleaned all the grounding contacts as well as the power cable/terminals with a wire brush. I had originally replaced the power cable with a 48" 4 gauge one but that ended up being an issue since i didnt put the heat sheild back on and the cable rested on the exhaust manifold and i ended up burning the cable. I have since cleaned off the old one that has the shielding already on it and also put the heat sheild back on and its starts without issue.

Onto your issue.
If youre not hearing the starter solenoid engage (listen to the video file above), check the following:
that the starter relay is clicking in the passenger foot well when you turn to position 2 (start engine). (https://www.partsgeek.com/ss/?i=1&ssq=W0133-3601185&x=8&y=12) (If you pull the right panel off, there are 3 relays, 2 yellow, 1 green. its the middle relay. they are the bottom row near the floor)
that the check engine light is on (if its not, this might be a sign your engine is immobilized by the security system)
that you have tried shifting to neutral and trying again
that your lights/accessories arent draining a lot of power (battery is bad)
have battery tested at your local auto shop if you cant at home

If you hear it engage under the truck but nothing else also make sure all of the accessories and harmonic balancer move freely. This should take some strength but should move with a wrench. I tried by using a large wrench on the fan clutch. This is to make sure the engine isnt locked up. if it doesnt move, the starter wont be able to turn anything.

I hope this helps. This was my

Thanks for the response.
I did everything that was mentioned and I think it is the starter that bit the dust. A new starter is coming so hopefully I will be up and running this week.
I plan on replacing the allen head bolts with hex heads and some large nuts as washers as member fish mentioned for quicker future takeoff.

When the new starter is installed I will report the results.
Another thanks on the wire gauge.

I am struggling with this right now as well. Had an intermittent issue last fall, swapped the starter and was fine. January it just would not start at all. I have swapped the starter, I guess the leads are next. So frustrating.
