When it lands, one of its main rivals will be the Ineos Grenadier, which is being developed by one of the largest chemical producers in the world. It sounds like the truck will be much closer to the original Defender than the current-generation model, in part because it will receive body-on-frame construction and solid axles. Here again, we don't know whether the Grenadier will be sold in the United States, or if it will exclusively be available on the other side of the pond. Production is tentatively scheduled to begin in Wales in 2021.

are we ever going to see a pic of this thing?

Have never understood the fascination with the van sides. Besides someone who wants to make a scene, who is really going to use this for construction stateside? At least there’s no floating lunchbox

The fascination stemmed from the UK market. Commercial vehicles are taxed at a different rate so you used to see a lot of these "hard top" models being driven by individuals who wanted the stripped-down version and didn't want to pay the higher registration costs of the County trim level.

I also don't anticipate seeing a lot of new Defenders on American construction sites, certainly not with the dimensions of the cargo door opening.

I also don't anticipate seeing any new Defender replacing the Toyota Land Cruiser 75-76-78 series in the developing world by governments, aid agencies, tourism operators, etc. I can see it being used by European police forces, public utility companies, and other users who want the capability and also need to meet higher emissions/safety standards. That's more the target market: the commercial fleet or government agencies for which a Land Cruiser won't meet local regs.

Tomorrow, supposedly, according to their Facebook page.

This article is a pretty good description of what Ineos is going for and has the photos many of us have been wanting to see. Diesel engine, solid axles, long list of simple, utilitarian features - sounds appealing to me.

" The wheel arches are the shape they are to allow the maximum axle articulation. The front wings have a flat expanse so you can rest a mug of tea or a laptop on them and they’re strong enough to sit on. Exterior wiring, with exit points to the roof at the front and rear, allows auxiliary lighting to be easily sorted. There’s the option of having a utility rail with a universal fixing system on the doors and you can fit a Euro pallet inside. "

They fucked up the slant of the hood badly. And the grill and headlights. Will not sell. Why are these people so fucking incompetent? Just follow the script of one of the most iconic vehicles ever produced. How hard is that? Honestly makes me want to start a company. But, to allude to the old adage, I don’t want to “end up a millionaire”.***

***if you don’t get the reference, please do not opine with idiotic commentary.

Taste is subjective, otherwise Pontiac would never have sold a single Aztek. I happen to think the vehicle in the photos above is attractive. If it was on sale today it would be the only new car I would consider buying (although possibly also the forthcoming Defender 90). There are many differences between this and the new Defender, but the fundamental thing that sets them apart and defines all other differences is that Ineos knows their audience and listened to them. The design reflects that. Defender failed to engage its market and as a result we have the product of Gerry McGovern's vision, which is impressive in many ways but doesn't achieve what many Land Rover enthusiasts wanted. The Grenadier, by contrast, appears to have integrated Ratcliffe's vision and the desires of a broader 4x4-driving constituency. No mean feat. I beg do differ and think that it will sell, but we're yet to see the price tag so that will be a factor.

The hood does look a little off. Headlights/grill is fine. It's those taillights that I don't care for. Gives the back a bugeyed look. Overall though not bad. I'm waiting for the Bronco. If the economy doesn't just go over a cliff and the rig looks as good as some of the examples I've seen I may pull the trigger. That said this has to be a really difficult time to be introducing new models, or new car sells period. With people being more concerned with food on the table and a roof over their heads. It would seem that would be a bigger problem for Ford than the other two, them targeting a more affluent customer and one less likely affected by an economic downturn.

The grill and headlights don’t bother me at all. The slant of the hood is weird, but I think that is a product of pedestrian laws rather than design look. The video episode on the design mentions they needed to actually make it taller, but they removed the plastic engine cover to avoid doing that because they couldn’t lower the engine anymore.

I don’t like the double sunroof t-top look. But I’m sure that’ll be an option in the end.

Overall, based off looks and the mechanicals revealed thus far, I would buy this when released

You can get the roof same color as the truck, it doesn't have to be white. There is no good reason to put a hole in the roof of a vehicle. There are 2 kinds of sunroofs. Ones that leak, and ones that are going to leak.

In general agree especially with Discos and why I have a SD one. However the sunroof on the ‘94 LWB hasn’t leaked for the many years I’ve owned it. Knocking on wood as I wrote that as feel sure it is more luck than anything else!

Love sunroofs for the extra light they let in the vehicle. I‘ve hardly ever openEd mine. If they leak it’s a quick fix to seal them up

I like it. Even the hood, looks a bit like the G-wagen hood. That raised hood may be necessary depending on the power plant they have in there.

1,500 mile cap per month. Disco Sport and Evoque for £750($934), Disco and Velar for £1150($1433), RRS for £1350($1682), Range Rover for £1600($1993).

A $60k loan at 3% for 5 years is $1078 a month. What is the attraction supposed to be? The fact that you can swap vehicles after 6 months if you want? Or is this some scheme to sell(lease) more vehicles that won’t otherwise sell? Or am I clueless and people actually finance the entire cost of a $90k vehicle and this is a good deal for those folks?

Reading it I don't believe that program is aimed at an individual who has to crunch the numbers. Every cost of owning a vehicle is covered except gas. More so someone who wants to drive it and not think about anything else, and you can get a new ride every six months.

There should be zero cost of owning a BRAND NEW vehicle, except maybe an oil change.

They pay insurance, maintenance, repairs, etc. All you pay is fuel. In conversations with people through the years about used vs new, and the "I don't want the high payment of a new vehicle" I always point out that a monthly payment can be planned for. It's the unexpected repair bill on top of a payment that sucks. Here you always have a "new" vehical. This is kind of like the program Toyota offers their employees, only their's is a lot less money.
