so for the sake of this argument should I pretend the Defender doesn't have any of that stuff? I admit the detachable sway bars are pretty bad ass, but Defender has all that other stuff.
No it does have that. I can’t put 37” tires on it from the dealer and it costs $80k as tested or $53k for the stripper model. There lies the difference. It is also exactly what it claims to be. It’s not an $80k modern vehicle with lockers front and rear comparing itself to an open diff base model predecessor.

For perspective I liked the DC100, the new Defender is 10 years late. This is the offering in 2020. I like the Freelander everywhere except the US. I am just disappointed with the Defender on all levels, but especially the price for what it is. I will buy a Bronco and a Grenadier. I don’t see the point of the Defender over any other SUV.

Well I guess we agree to disagree. I'm ordering the 90 the day they open up the orders. But in the interest of fully being transparent, in place of a demo I get 500 gross added to my check every month for the first 2 years then 250 a month for the next 2 years. To me that makes it a easy decision.

Good for you, congrats and I look forward to seeing it. Books aren't open on the 90 yet, huh? Any word on the 130? Lots of LR3/4 owners are waiting for that one for comparable cargo room, the 110's only major shortcoming. The 130 might put the last nail in the coffin of the Disco 5, which is already being outsold - big time - by the new 110.

It was about 10 years ago Land Rover split the brands up a bit. Range Rover on the top, and anything utility on the bottom. I was scared they planned to sell off one or the other. Still don't understand what they wanted to achieve. So Defender slid into the utility half and really outshines the big Discovery. Now that you mention it I see very few big Discoveries going out. And we have probably 6 110's on the lot. I haven't heard anything at all about the 130's other than there might be a pickup truck coming to our market.

You basically got that with ACE on a D2.

What makes a new Defender superior off road to a new Range Rover? The Range Rover swag bars are disconnected at low speed, it has a locking rear diff, and probably the same traction control and chassis systems.

Agree. But I don't care, I'm just driving it. I think it's going to be way better than my Cruze in a Blizzard

I think I’d rather be in a Range Rover
I would be too but the wife insisted ‘we’re not Range Rover people’ when I considered an L322. I’ve always liked how the Discovery line fit and, while I didn’t expect a bare bones solid axle vehicle, think the new Defender encroaches in that segment while the Discovery 5 leaves a lot to be desired, at least looks wise, that I’m not sure I can get over. Have a hunch more LR3/4 owners would consider a new Defender over a D5

When we moved to Switzerland had to sell the 109 SW as it couldn’t pass their regulations and be registered. Had a ‘94 RRC LWB sitting at ECR that needed work. I thought about getting a Disco and my wife said she couldn’t see me driving anything but a Rangie! Now we have both although the Disco is really her Rover.
If I were considering a new Defender vs a Rangie I’d opt for the Rangie. Both though have way too many electronics for my taste.

Our Rangie travels well. On road to Val-d'Isère, France.
Although our 110 did have more room. Border crossing into Chile.
Between the two I’d take the Rangie although the 110 was a great Rover.

i didn't think i was a Range Rover guy until i picked up a 2000 P38.

the ride is so nice in it that i now prefer it to the 2004 Discovery for any highway driving.

and i know both the Ranger Rover and the 2004 Discovery have the same 4.6 but i could swear the Rangie feels more powerful and accelerates faster.

After my 96 Disco and my 2004, this new to me 2013 LR4 is amazing. The power from the 5L V8 is great, night and day difference, especially with the 33s and steel add-ons that were bolted all over my tired old 2004. The best part though is the off-road ride quality. I just did about 200 miles off-road and this LR4 just floats. You can literally drive all day, which I did for 5 days. I installed the XLifter suspension module and I don’t even touch all the stock electronic gizmos. Putting the suspension height exactly where you want it on the fly, down the to mm, is a great bonus. Given my newfound appreciation of the LR4, I’d hop in a new Defender and drive away with a big smile.

Great to hear you’re enjoying the LR4!
