SES Light- Again

Aloha,

Service engine light came on solid on our 03 D2 with 152k on the dash. Very well maintained as I have every service record going back to beginning.

the light came on and threw codes for O2 sensors and a knock sensor. all four were changed and along with new plugs and an oil change.

not more than 5 minutes after leaving the Indy garage, the Service Engine light comes back on solid again. So we take it back to the garage.

there they find a valve gasket and injector seals need replacement. So we take it in. At that time the truck was misfiring and it sounded pretty bad. Gaskets and seals replaced, along with the belt and the plug wires.

picked up the truck today and drove away from the Indy garage and the Service Engine light came back on again and the truck has a rough idle.

gotta ask if anyone has something similar or can say if I am missing something obvious? I am about $3,600 into this and beginning to question a few things now.

thanks for any help.

Parts changing shops like that give real technicians bad names. Find another shop.
It’s even worse than just being a parts changer. These ass hats know damn well that lights going to come on as soon as he leaves the lot. He’s not just fucking stupid, he doesn’t care. He’ll be out of business in no time. I would go get my money back.

Sadly, other than the dealership here in Honolulu (which is a huge scam operation) we have very few options for Land Rover service. Right now I am tying to find someone that can service the transmission and its brutal.
So, I can’t just slam the guy. Thought that someone may have seen this sort of thing before.

Resolve one fault and 2 more appear. Is it just a cascade effect or am I missing something?

Today, I am going to pull the hoses off one by one and check them. Maybe its a vacuum leak, dont know. When I grab the fault codes, I will have more info.

I heard in the past nobody can fix shit over there. I think the best thing you can do is buy new, cheap Asian cars and sell them when the warranty runs out. I'm going by what someone told me. He was a pretty good mechanic and worked that area for Land Rover when they used to have a position called Field Service Engineer. He told me stories about what he's seen done by " professional mechanics"

Don't let that fucker off the hook. Why not piss him off? He obviously can't help you with your car. And I'll offer up again, if your just trying to get rid of money, I'm open to helping you out with that.

I think a well crafted letter by you to HLR management will get there attention! You mentioned $3600 already spent and you still no resolve? I’m with Stew on this don’t let them slide on this make them fix it or get your money back! DS mentioned challenge the payments through your CC or bank. Or small claim court. Persue it Dave! All the best.

Sorry I misunderstood it’s not dealer it’s an Indy shop. My comments remain the same, he’s turned the fix “SES” into a paying job! Make him fix it period!

It's probably not a vac leak. You need a scanner that can look at the o2 sensor activity. I suspect that the ECM isn't supplying the ground they need on the red/blk wires. It's the only wire color that all 4 sensors have. If thats whats wrong with it I've fixed it by splicing all 4 together with an eyelet and bolting it to the bracket that holds the module.

Stew,

How did you know that the sensors were not getting the ground? The shop I went to has a very in depth LR/ Jaguar computer that I am sure can read that data. I just need to tell the muppet mechanic what he is looking for and then the splice as the fix.

Or I can I just splice the wires and see if the code comes back after its cleared. That might work also.

What exact codes are you getting now? Seems like you are chasing the problem based on “what the shop told you was wrong” instead of reading your own codes so you know what to look at.

You can probably get a code reader for around $25.

I don’t KNOW this. I suspect it. That can be measured and verified.
I think this because every time I’ve seen some dumb ass replace all 4 sensors, that’s what was actually wrong. From 2,000 miles away nobody nobody can know for sure what’s wrong with your truck

You could have something as simple as bad gas or a fouled spark plug. Get a reader and post the codes.
