St. Louis isn’t worth stopping regardless of anything else!
There are a lot of really nice things about St. Louis and it is full really good people. However, it has some major issues that cause a whole host of problems. The issues are primarily created by poverty and the crime that comes with it. Since the auto industry began abandoning St. Louis it has been in slow decline. Not terribly long ago, St. Louis was second only to Detroit in the number of vehicles built annually. There were problems before that but without the large numbers of good paying manufacturing jobs, those issues have been exacerbated. The issues are and were primarily poverty in the northern areas, both city and county. Bad political leadership in the 70s did major damage and has greatly harmed the region since.

Boeing (formerly McDonnell Douglas) also only employs a fraction of its peak. Then, consider all the jobs lost from the businesses that supplied and otherwise were supported by the manufacturing economy. There are still a LOT of retired people living in St. Louis drawing good union job pensions from the auto manufacturers and Boeing (my Mom is one of them). When they all pass and their pension incomes are lost in the local economy, I can’t see how that doesn’t further suppress the metro area. All that being said, more than anything, I left because of the horrible weather. My decision to move was really more about having a better option for this point in my life, not escaping.

i love St. Louis.

not that i wouldn't move to Wyoming/Montana/Idaho in a minute if i could.

but St. Louis has a great food and drinking scene and it's cheap. i've been to Philly and further East. good food, but expensive. and to my taste, not as good. same with Chicago. good food scene but will cost you.

and the housing in StL is hard to beat. you can get a lot of house for hundreds of thousands less than anything East or north in Chicago.

St. Louis definitely has its issues with race and poverty. i have a mixed race family and it can be challenging. shot by both sides kind of thing.

the City/County divide is a mess and the politics of it keep a lot from getting done.

i'm a Union Tile Setter and the trades have been good to me and my family. for years the Unions have been in decline but there has been an upswing recently that i hope is a trend and not an aberration.

back on topic, we have had two work trucks stolen in the past seven years. we eventually got both of them back with little damage. the first time it was a couple of Bosnian kids. pretty sure they just saw the truck and decided to jack it. they dumped it a day or two later with a punched out lock and ignition.

second time it was tweakers needing meth money. they stole our truck and used it to steal a trailer full of tools parked a couple of warehouses over.
we got that one back in two weeks with a punched out door lock and ruined ignition.

Lunchbox, glad you got your Rover back. i'll take a look in my basement and shed and see if i have any D1 parts laying around.

I’ve started stripping the interior. I’m going to clean and POR15 everything while it’s bare.

Flap disc the floors, cleaned, metal prepped and POR15. I figured since they destroyed my interior, I would clean up while it’s out.

It was in the hood. The police wouldn’t even leave me alone until it was on the flat bed
In DC years ago I came home to see some hoodrats riding off on my roommate's 1959 Lambretta Li 150. He had ridden that thing across the country at 55 mph all the way to Arizona where a semi plowed him from behind driving into the sunset. Basically enough force to throw him off and out of the way.

At any rate I had taken the metro so I quickly jumped on my motorcycle, no helmet, dress shoes, etc, and chased them. Chased them right up to a housing project. They saw me coming and scattered and ran.

Then they realized I was just one piece of salt in the pepper shaker and started coming back.

So I hauled ass out of there. About 1/4 mile I flagged down a cop and told him the story, he followed me up to the project where they were trying to run off with the scooter again. They dropped it. But I'm there with two cycles and no way to get them both at the same time. Then more and more residents started coming gathering and yelling since it was just me and a cop. Suddenly his backup showed up. One stayed there while I got the scooter and pushed it home, then he drove me back and I got my motorcycle.

The fine upstanding citizens of DC showed up the next day and stole his scooter again, never to be seen.

Good news is…this gave me an excuse to fix a bunch of little issues, like my door panels. I made some new ones using all of my spares. And I got new Morel speakers going in. Now I need to find some a-pillars without the tweeters.

Man you guys live around some dystopian shitholes. Haven't locked my house or cars for nearly 10 years.
Hahaha.

I'm in Colorado now. I don't even own a house key. Like I know we have them, they came with the house, but I have no clue where one is. My van keys stay in the van. Motorcycle keys in the motorcycle. We went camping a few months ago and I came home to the front door wide open. I'd forgotten to shut it.

DC was an experience but in 10 years living there (in DC, not in some shithole suburb and calling it DC) that's the only problem I ever had. I moved to an even "worse" area and I could leave my 1970 Chevy longbed running in front of the house for a month and no one would touch it. I left my Ducati Multistrada in my back yard with the key in it for years and no one touched it. Of course I used to buy a bushel of crabs and invite the neighbors over once a year for cheap beer and crabs. In short, I was neighborly.

Later, after more whiteys moved in and immediately put bars on their windows and shut themselves in from the "locals" all their shit would get stolen and harassed.

Meanwhile my Duc still had the key in the ignition. Pays to be a good neighbor, especially when you're moving into poorer neighborhoods and pushing folks out. At least it worked for me.

Thread hijack over....Glad you got the rover back man!
