I purchased a 96 D1 a while ago with a locked up engine. Said vehicle only has 55,xxx miles on it and the overall condition backs that up. I have since installed a replacement engine and all is well.
I have had the removed locked up engine on an engine stand waiting for me to salvage parts from it. The reason it was locked up was a bit of a mystery. It changed hands a few times before it came into my possession and the person I purchased it from didnt offer a conclusive reason. After tearing into it I discovered a liner that had slid down and the crankshaft struck it, breaking a chunk of the liner off which was found in the pan.
i haven’t removed the crankshaft (which is what led me to this post.... will explain) and don’t know if the reason it is locked up is due to the crank being wedged on a liner or the rust in the cylinder is the cause. The piston in the slipped liner bore has chunks out of it as well.
The parts i have been salvaging have been in excellent condition. The timing cover/oil pump parts are in great condition. The heads, aside from the valves in the slipped liner cylinder are excellent. I previously pulled the flywheel (5 speed) to reuse with the now installed replacement engine. It was in a condition more in line with 5,000 miles, not 55,000. There wasn’t even a slight bit of wear on the flywheel surface and the clutch disc was barely below new wear spec.
I haven’t removed the crankshaft yet. I was going to just get rid of it with the block. Think it is worth saving the crankshaft? I suspect it is as nice as the oil pump / gears.
