Saw one this weekend where a guy said generic code readers were useless, told a LR newbie to buy a Nanocom. Nanocoms are great but not always needed. He was a Brit so take it for what it is worth.

If he's a Brit and only familiar with TD5 he's kind of correct. "obd 2" is such a mess of different protocols all thrown together. most crappy readers dont support headerless iso9141 and even if they did none of the generic phone apps that talk to them would use that feature

gems supports both headerless and headers, td5 looks like its only headerless and it may require a seed/key response before it'll respond to queries

Im confident I could get an iphone to talk to a td5 with off the shelf stuff, but I dont do diesel or series 2s

My autel scanner is great for any Land Rover 05 and newer. Not really worth a shit on a GEMS truck. I can't communicate with any thing. Not even the ECM.

Wow that's interesting. You have a 900 series right?
Yeah I think it's a 906. I think the 908 is a completely different unit. The description of the thing says it works on ISO, so if I ever have time I'll try to force feed it a GEMS vehicle. All in all I'm happy with it. For your sport it would work very well.

There's 46 now (last time I've seen it).
Included are:
Series I, II, IIA, and III
Defender
Disco 1 and 2
RR Classic (1 vote)
LR3 and 4
All in all, a gorgeous internet answer.

Choosing between a Series 1 and an LR4 is tough. Both have push button ignition, four wheels, headlamps, etc. Where are the poll trolls pushing P38 and Freelanders though?

Oh yes, one vote for Freelander. Since I know who made it, it was definitely not serious.

The Freelander was a great vehicle in other markets. 4 cylinder diesel with a hand mixer. Here we got the shitbox Rover Car Group K engine and a Jatco auto trans. It was a fucking disaster here in the states.
At the standard issue off-road events the dealerships used to do they always got that rear muffler ripped off.
