as far as i know, all NAS D2, '99-'04, had the Bosch engines. only D1s had the Gems.

i think some of the early P38s had GEMS engines.

No D2s here had Gems there was a split year in 99 there was a D1 and a D2 but the D2s had Bosch systems and your other question the D2s didn't have a linkage except the '04 model, late 02s and most 03s didn't even have the nipple to attach a linkage

Okay. Well I was just curious and a bit confused because an 01 D2 popped up for sale around the corner from me. Once I got there to look at it, I confirmed it was a Bosch engine however it has a diff lock lever. I'm only familiar with D1's

Lots of us have added the CDL to early DIIs. They all have the high low lever, but did not lock the center until 2004.
The 99s with GEMS were all DIs. There are no DII bodies with a Gems from the factory here.

Ahh okay, that makes a lot more sense. I just seen the lever and sticker and jumped to the conclusion that it had a CDL forgetting about low range

The diff lock was taken away by BMW. Rover was kicking and screaming the whole way. That’s why the t case had the mechanism but it was never connected to a lever.
In 99 they made both the Disco1 and the lesser Disco2

Only the earlier boxes (99-01ish) had the internal parts for the diff lock but lacked the lever.
These are easy to convert, you can use stock parts or simply add an external lever.

02's lacked all the internals too and require a replacement transfer box to add a center diff lock.
Theory was that the traction control system would mimic the effects of the diff lock.

Diff lock was reinstated sometime in 03/04 (I think with the facelift).
Don't have access to parts cat from work so cant tell you exact chassis number changes but the information is out there.

to be fair, they're ALL land Rover engines, the engine management (ECU) changed from GEMS (Lucas) to Bosch in 1999 with the D2.
