I checked with a different coil pack, No difference
The ignition misfire seems very random.
I assume the "ECU" is Engine Control Unit. Where exactly is it located?
I am sure that this is electrical. It is randomly missing fire on the cylinders. Where is the computer module that controls the ignition located?
I don't think it is the coil pack or the spark plug wires.
today I put some different spark plug wires and coil-pack with some I had lying round the garage.
It still runs rough and is "skipping" heavy petrol smell.
any ideas what to try next?

Just took it round the block (after it warmed to operating temp in the driveway).
It seems that the spar is missing intermittently and perhaps cross-sparking.
Spark plug wiring or maybe the ignition coil?
There is a heavy fuel smell so maybe one or more cylinders are not firing. Got to find out which ones.
Even being a '96, this engine has way too many electronic weak-links.
1996 Discovery 1 Petrol 4.0
Hello All:
I pieced-together another engine for my Disco !. (engine change #4). It runs. It doesn't run good. It misses, runs rough , Backfires and smells of petrol.
Especially until it warms-up really good.
What could be some of the causes and...
Hello All;
I put together a 4.0 Petrol engine from various spares left over from previous engines for my old Disco 1.
It cranks but runs very rough. There is even what sounds like metal to metal noise.
The engine skips on at least one cylinder.
What would be a good troubleshooting...
I found a RH FWD, caliper on ebay for a good price ($59.69UDS). Obviously aftermarket. I am thinking that because it is aftermarket I should RR the LH caliper also to make it symmetrical. Problem is there is only one LH, FWQ caliper left.
Is it a good idea to R&R both?
That is a good point. I sometimes forget how old my old Landy is.
I just did engine change #3. The last one "threw a rod" and totally destroyed the aluminium block. Whew !!!! When this one goes wrong, I may have to put the Chevy 350 in it.
Hello All;
Before I do something wrong and cause damage, I am going to ask for advice.
The RH Front wheel is leaking brake fluid. It is not coming from the line but rather, from inside the caliper somewhere. I can't see exactly where.
Is it necessary to replace the entire caliper assembly...
You were right. I crawled under the car and found the position sensor unplugged. It cranked but it runs very rough. I will address that later.
I am relieved that it starts.
You have an excellent point.
When the engine "blew" the camshaft exited the rear of the engine and damaged the reluctor.
I replaced all of that, obviously but it may have damaged the sensor itself.
Whew !!! What a Mess !!!!!
