    1997 Disco Immobilized

Starter motor circuit: black wire with orange stripe needs to be shorted to the ground. The only other _meaningful_ connection between ECU and alarm box is black wire.

    1997 Disco Immobilized

Ha There were times when PTSchram alluded to ways to bypass the immobilizer on RRC/D1, but never disclosed them. One thing that happened to my D1 was this: a sticky door lock caused TWO fuses to blow feeding the green immobilizer box. I eventually replaced one with a circuit breaker, and haven't...

    Singular Point of Failure

Since all of them are made in China likely at the same facility but under a gazillion of senseless names, it is hard to say which is good and which is bad. My take was - find the one with the largest amp-hour and peak current rating, and divide it by 3 or 4. Which means a 300A-rated battery will...

    Singular Point of Failure

Eric, I can definitely relate to that! We were once working in a remote end of Echo Range of China Lake NAWS, and since it was July, we kept the engine and A/C on in the company F250. We then returned to Inyokern airfield (about two hours away, half on dirt), shut off the truck, and... later...

    14CUX running rich

I think by now I know all of 14CUX piles of wisdom - this one, too. Well-written and a lot of good stuff. Just too lazy to break out a scope and check the O2 sensors.

    14CUX running rich

You're correct, I misread what you wrote. But I don't have 10" of vacuum.

    14CUX running rich

Stew, Air pressure at sea level is 14.7 psi. 18" of vacuum is something that simply does not exist. You must be thinking of 18" of mercury - I have about 19-20" inHg of vacuum.

    14CUX running rich

I thought I did... The ignition timing is about 12 deg BTDC, the manifold vacuum about 10psi. It runs better now, but it still tends to get into this hunting idle mode - but more often than not, it settles. Maybe more importantly, the short term fuel trims never go negative. True about the...

    Death Valley, revisited with LRCSD

    14CUX running rich

I don't think I have a vacuum leak. Something else is making the ECU overfueling the engine - and it only started after I replaced the timing chain and sprockets. Haven't scoped O2 sensors yet - but everything tells me the ECU would throw a fit if they were not switching between lean and rich...

    14CUX running rich

RG tells me the tune is 3361 Not really. There are four manifold vacuum connections: to IAC solenoid (doesn't leak), to oil separator/PCV (doesn't leak), to fuel pressure regulator (doesn't leak), and to charcoal canister (haven't checked). Not sure if smoke machine would show anything with the...

    14CUX running rich

Pulled the port on the intake plenum housing the IAC solenoid, cleaned it up, put it back in. No changes. Did something I can't remember - now the hot idle in gear is around 600 rpm, pretty stable. WTF...

I bought another one... 1996 SD

What a beautiful D1! I am sooo envious. And, IIRC, this truck has been very well cared for. And US 395 is my favorite byway, close to 89 and 191.

    14CUX running rich

Probably, scope the O2 sensors. BTW, they are not switched side-to-side, checked this morning just in case. Something is making the ECU to richen up the mixture. I may also try running a resistor in parallel with coolant temperature sensor - maybe it cannot fully lean out the engine running at...

    14CUX running rich

Update... Resealed the intake - no changes. Hooked up PC version of RoverGauge, here's the log (from running in front of my house to parked in front of my office): Check this: everything seems to work while driving. But when I stop, in gear or not, I have to open up the idle bypass screw -...

    Holy F'ing Cow

If you haven't had a chance to call AAA lately: AAA tow truck operators will NOT allow you to ride in the tow truck. Last year was a giant "go fuck yourself" from AAA.

    In vehicle radios.

I guess the preferences in comms reflect the terrain. It is not uncommon for a group of 8-10 vehicles to stretch over 10 miles in the desert. We've tested the 2m ham radio performance during the last trip to Death Valley - between two vehicles with mobile radios and permanently installed and...
