What’s a 14cux full tune up look like?

Thanks, boxster. Just to clarify. It did restart and then ran normally (and as an aside, did impressively well in the snow and ice, was expecting some weirdness from the ABS based on hearsay about these D1s, but never noticed it—maybe it’s not working lol). But it was a reminder to get on this...

What’s a 14cux full tune up look like?

Hi all, The old 3.9’s still running strong, but lately I’ve been noticing longer cranking times and occasionally some idle stumbles. Things came to a head during this cold snap with a stall after a cold start and then a reluctant restart. No codes set. I’d like to do a full tune up before I...

    D1 No Start

I don't think there's anything sophisticated in the cranking circuit. How about: jumper cable to starter if it doesn't spin, then replace starter if it does spin, then check wiring to starter and make sure ignition lock is sending the go ahead? Curious to hear if there's anything else in the...

    Oil Pressure Help Needed.

Not OP but same symptoms in mine. I did remove and clean up the relief valve and the spring measured in spec. This is a great idea. Not sure why it didn’t occur to me—especially since the first thing I did was change the OP sensor. Will be curious to hear OP’s results and might try it myself...

    Oil Pressure Help Needed.

A long thread from an RRC owner who finally solved a similar issue with a new front cover: https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/95-range-rover-classic-low-no-oil-pressure.329648/ Probably the most obvious culprit honestly. I could see some very faint scoring on mine when it was apart. Maybe...

    Oil Pressure Help Needed.

Seems like bypassing the oil cooler would be an interesting experiment. Could a leaky o-ring fitting there cause the pump to lose prime I wonder? Cheers, joe b in pdx

    Oil Pressure Help Needed.

If you search a little here you’ll find several of us have D1’s that exhibit the same behavior. Your case is intriguing because you seem to have caught the issue when it started, so at least the potential causes are narrowed down a bit. The bad news is no one seems to be able to pin it down. The...

    Bleeding Clutch Method?

PS I found the reverse bleed method popular mostly on non-US forums. The TDIs have some extra complication at the slave cylinder (I think for dampening clutch judder with the lumpy diesel) that might be an extra air trap down there. Cheers, joe b pdx or 95 D1 v8 5sp

    Bleeding Clutch Method?

Not to put a damper on it, but I couldn’t get the reverse bleed to work on my D1. This was after a slave and master swap. Struggled for an hour before I finally rigged up a 2x4 to hold the pedal down (no helper available) and had it held the usual way in no time. Maybe the initial bleed helped...

    D1 seat bottoms

So far so good with the canvas, but I have to admit I've had limited seat time (need to find time to do up a leaky valley gasket). This was just a test run for me, so I didn't fool with replacing/fixing the foam. I expected to have to go a gauge or two thicker, but the lightweight canvas...

    Camshaft - how bad?

FWIW our compressor cycles quite a bit and also cools fine. The truck does have one condenser fan out, but we only use AC on the highway so don't think that would matter. Keep meaning to get one of those Corolla fan motors that fits, but then summer ends! I haven't put gauges to it yet--haven't...

1995 Disco leak pooling on timing belt cover?

I have one pooling there from a slow intake/valley gasket leak up high on the passenger/RHS. Thought I'd solved it with the (bigger) hose leak you mentioned but nope. And before that, it was masked by an even BIGGER leak from the timing cover gasket. Seems like 200k is EOL for a lot of gaskets...

    Oil pump priming

Very interesting. When you say “early” and “later” do you just mean distributor driven oil pump vs. crank-driven (gerotor) pump? Or is it more subtle? I only see one gasket listed at AB for the whole run of Discos in the US, part ERR7280. Clarifying because I did find the pickup routing in my...

    D1 seat bottoms

Updating this old thread with another method to repair the D1 seat sling/diaphragm thing that rips. I repaired mine with a strip of canvas a few months ago, and it worked pretty well (other than being a pain to sew) until it ripped at a new place in the rubber panel. I decided to replicate the...

    Oil pump priming

I like the idea of checking for flow. D1’s seem to have a reputation for being slow to build pressure in many cases, including our 95. After I did the front cover and am the fixins, I cranked forever and got no pressure at the filter. It’s an old engine, so I just fired it up and pressure built...

Mechanical temp gauge set up help

Haven’t tried the coolant hose adapter yet but was impressed with the quality of the Glowshift oil filter adapter. They’d be on my short list. Let us know what you do! cheers, joe b pdx or 95 Disco v8 5sp

Start up oil pressure, takes too long for the low pressure light to go out?

Checking back in on this thread after nearly a year. To recap, I went through everything* as part of a front cover reseal and didn't really find a smoking gun. It's consistently fine on cold starts in warm weather with 15w40 (oil light off w/in 5 secs) and consistently terrifying in "cold"...

    D1 fuel economy

Maybe not directly comparable to your GEMS truck, but our stock 95 14cux 5sp approaching 200k averages 12. About 11 around town, 13 mixed, and 17 highway. Haven’t done extensive freeway driving with it. PO claimed 18 mph for his daily freeway/hwy commute, and I tend to believe it. 50-60 seems...

SRS Light on in 1996 Discovery

Hi Don, I haven't done mine yet but plan to follow the instructions in this thread: https://discoweb.org/index.php?threads/95-disco-resetting-reading-srs-airbag-codes.98920/ Not positive if the SRS diagnostics are different in your 96 but worth a look! joe b pdx or 95 Disco V8 5sp

    PSA: Check your axle breathers

If you haven’t checked in a while… I’d noticed a little pressure in the rear diff last time I pulled the fill plug. The D1 breathers seem a little underengineered with that one tiny passage and no filter. The line was gummed up with 90wt sludge beyond the breather, too. Hard to get clear...
