    Old Timers Unite

This is a funny forum, that's for sure. I got on shortly after I bought my 2000 D2, maybe in '02 or '03. It's been a great resource, and still is, but some of the flame wars and flame bait posts make it a less than inviting place.

    Starting Welder suggestions.

I started with a Lincoln flux-core MIG welder from Home Depot, 20 years ago, and I still have it and use it, even though I have a full TIG setup now. Cheap, simple, easy to use, and move around. Easy to drag out to fix a fence, etc. If my house burned down tomorrow, I'd still buy a MIG before...

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

After a front cover gasket replacement (what a PITA), and a couple hundred miles of driving, I think it's safe to say my coolant leak was the front cover seal. I wish I had thought of that before I did the head gaskets! I believe my gasket failed at the top-right side, between the coolant port...

    What is this?

I'm not sure all the D2 models have it, since it's not shown in my 1999 workshop manual, so it's possible you could delete it, if you don't do much summer time driving.

    What is this?

That's the the power steering fluid cooling loop.

    Coolant in Oil

I had a similar failure, and am currently in the process of replacing the timing chain cover gasket, after having done the head gaskets and had the coolant loss re-occur.

How Much Rust is Too Much

Learning to weld is pretty easy with a cheap MIG welder from the usual places and some youtube research, but there are a few things to keep in mind with welding above: 1. Burning paint is toxic 2. Unclean steel welds poorly, but flux-core MIG is very forgiving. TIG is very NOT forgiving. 3...

any information on filter for air/heat

That's supposed to be open, but there should be a strip of filter material behind the grate of the cowl: https://www.roverparts.com/filters/pollen-cabin-filters/JZL100120G/

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

Thanks discotew and rovercanus, that's a great suggestion. Probably worth doing before making any more drastic decisions.

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

Straight-edge and flashlight on the block with new straight-edge bought just long enough to make the diagonal. (not a bit of light) And dial test indicator on the heads. Spec is 0.002, and I saw 0.001 max on the heads. I chased every thread, cleaned with acetone and blew out everything. Studs...

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

My engine blew again! After just 100 miles or so. Coolant in the oil. :-( I'm pretty confident in my head gasket job, that the block and heads were flat, and there were no cracks in the castings or pinholes in the liners. I'm not 100% confident, so it could be just another blown gasket, but is...

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

Finally finished the head gasket job this week. I checked all the liners, and even did a dye crack check on every cylinder and the heads. Everything looked ok and other than that bump next to the pin hole the heads were within spec for flatness. So I milled the bumps down myself and reassembled...

    2004 D2 steering box adjustment

There should definitely be a hex or torx hole in the center of the adjustment bolt. It could be filled with dirt and oil. Maybe poke at it a bit. As you adjust, do it very slowly. An eighth of a turn at a time or so.

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

@kris812 I checked the heads with a straight edge, and they're OK. I'm going to check the block as well. I can't see anything amiss with the block alignment pins, but they barely stick up, so I'm not sure I could see if they were crooked. I'll definitely flatten the heads, though your story...

Engine head alignment pin holes out of round

Hey all, I'm doing my head gaskets, due to white smoke and bubbling coolant a few weeks ago. When I got the heads off, I noticed that all four holes for the alignment pins (two holes, on each head) were out-of-round, looking like they got pulled outward. It's only a millimeter or two, but it's...

    Help with secondary air intake

I have mine pulled apart ATM, but I'm pretty sure the upper tube of the SAI pipe goes to the SAI air pump, against the right-hand side of the firewall, and the lower tube goes to the SAI valve attached to the right side header. Only one should fit with the rubber tube/coupler between the pipe...

Heads, exhaust, rockers all at once?

I'm doing head gaskets, again.... Any reason not to remove the head, exhaust manifold, and rockers all as one unit? I'm already planning on doing the manifold and head together, to save my knuckles, but why not the rocker too?

D2 coil pack 3 wires plug

The "Discovery Series II 2000MY Electrical Circuit Diagrams - 2nd Edition" page 20.4 shows them as wires going straight to the ECU. Probably trigger voltage for each of the two spark generators in each module.

Blew coolant, overheated, white smoke, but good compression

I put it all back together, filled up the coolant with water, idled for a while fine, then drove around a bit. Drives fine, but starts rough and lost about a quarter inch of coolant from the reservoir in 20 mins of driving, including a little uphill. Thanks for the feedback Dary and Terry...

Blew coolant, overheated, white smoke, but good compression

Hey All, the other day I was driving up a hill when I thought I heard some odd noises, but wasn't sure, then noticed the temperature idiot light. I pulled over, let it cool down a bit, then filled up with water, and started it up. It ran fine, but after about a minute, coolant and gas shot out...
