There has been an 03 for sale for quite some time. It's advertised as a mechanics special because it has "loud lifters" according to the add. The rover seems to be in good condition otherwise. Is it a bad idea to even consider something such as this with the intention of getting it very cheap and then fixing the problem?

How cheap? Lifters are easy to change out while you are doing your head gaskets. Have a pair of rocker assemblies handy in case they are boned and causing the noise. But before you move on it do an oil pressure test to make sure it isn't a bad bearing.

It probably needs a block, not lifters. Has anyone ever seen a lifter fail on a DII? I haven't, but I've sure seen a lot of 03/04 Discos with knocking liners. In my experience it doesn't cause any problems other than making noise.

Like the automatic road oiler, the knocking liner is another unique Land Rover "feature." It's similar to loud pipes on motorcycles, everyone will know you're coming from a mile away.

The post says lifters not lifter. How many rovers have multiple liners rapping away? I suspect its an oil pressure issue.

I've had bad lifters beacause the cam took them out, but what was to blame the lifters or the cam.

What came first the chicken or the egg?

$1000 if the body is in great shape. $500 otherwise

You could get more than $500 for scrap. $280 on the catalytics alone than the aluminum wheels then you still have 2 tons of scrap metal at $270 a ton.

Jeez just yesterday a totaled 02 went through copart 90K creamed in the rear for $2500 plus fees.

Just searched it on craigs. Looks nice

Lifters and cams are failing an a regular basis since all oils 10-40 and lighter wt.
don't have any Zink in it any more if the rover V8 had roller lifters it would not be a problem. Some Amsoil and racing oils have the zink in it.

Is it a 4.6? Just wondering. Is there anyway you can record it for us to hear?

I was saying what he should pay for a non-running Disco. Based on your numbers above, even if he bought it for $1000 and parted/scrapped it, he wouldn't be making much on it (not even factoring in the time/cost to part it out).

Just sayin'. I wouldn't pay more than $1000 for a non-running (or suspect engine) Disco.

Yep, that's the one. Thinking if I could get it for $2500 or so and just replace the engine if needed it might be a good deal. Depending on what the cost of a new or rebuilt engine is................

Sorry misunderstood. I thougt you stated $1000 if the body is in good shape(bad engine) or $500(bad engine)with a worn body since the OP said it had a bad engine.

Still if I could buy an 03 D2 around these parts with a perfect body(bad engine) for $1000 I would buy everyone I could find.

I bet you could source a motor somewhere in Washington for $1500. Install yourself your golden. Have to pay a repair shop to install it then you minds will go buy a good runner somewhere else.
