04 D2 with 110k. Just got back from indi shop here in VA and was told that I need an engine reseal. Knew that headgaskets were needed, and have been leaking coolant for a while but I guess my oil pan gasket, front cover gasket among others are leaking too. They quoted me $4400 for complete engine reseal (headgaskets, cross seal, front cover gasket, plenum gasket, water pump gasket, intake seals etc) including new heads.

It's a good chunk of change for me, does this sound like fair price?

Would do it myself but don't have the time, space or tools to do it.

if not anyone no any other shops in Northern VA other than Roverland? They have been pretty good to me for the past few years, but nothing wrong with a second opinion.

Re: 04 D2 Engine reseal quote

I think the shop owner has a new boat to pay for.

I'd get a second opinion at another shop.

A 4.6 with 110k is sure to slip/crack/blow up within 5000 miles anyway. Save your money, call it a loss, and sell it to me for cheap.

If you are going to spend that kind of money, I think it would be best to get a short block with top hat liners and without the porosity issues these blocks have. Try looking at turners in the uk, OK european our even rover canibal. Rover canibal also might have other options for you like a refreshed range rover engine. Just my 2 C. Good luck

If you're lucky, Rover Cannibal will steal your truck without paying for it.

LOFL! I have a DII in the shop now with 264K miles on it.

Yeah, it's in for a headjob after the first one went almost 125K and three years, but it's still running.

So based on that (2600 + 1000 + 500) $4400 is in the ballpark, albeit a bit more right?

I have a Coscast block from europe with something like 19k on it with an 09 build date I will take 3100 for, you could get that installed and still be cheaper than what you are looking at.

I got a quote for $2400. I got the gasket set with bolts. It was slow at work, so I put my warehouse guys to work one Saturday, took them about 4.5 hours to remove the heads. I got the heads done for $250. It took them about 6.5 hours to put it back together. I did some minor supervising. FYI, my Disco had 114k on it when I bought it. It had a blown head gasket so I had them done. It had 313,000 on it when they were just replaced. Still on original bottom end and pistons. Still leaks, too, but not as much.

no. you don't need new heads. the heads need machined, which means they get tanked, inspected, new seals, valve job, and fly cut $360.

you need parts, which off the top of my head are....

DEALER ONLY!!!!
timing chain cover gasket
water pump gasket
oil pan gasket
crux seals (rear main cross sealsx2)
front main seal
oil pickup o-ring
water pipe o-ring (little one for the lower plenum)
water pipe o-ring (bigger one for the front of the lower plenum)
valley pan gasket
valley pan end gaskets x2
valley pan end clamps x2
lower plenum/intake manifold bolts x10 short ones x2 long ones
valve cover gaskets x2
err 7371 x4
err7370 x4
spark plugs....might as well do wires while your there
upper plenum gasket
head gasket x2
14 short head bolts
6 long head bolts
err3430
6.5 liters of oil
2 gallons of coolant
throttle body heater
handfuls of hose clamps
fuel hose to replace the plastic overflow lines
exhaust manifold gasket x2
downpipe gaskets x2
new exhaust down pipe nuts
drive belt

misc time to remove down pipe studs, chase threads, and re-install
about an hour to drill and tap new threads for the front crossmember bolts x8
more time to drill out the 2 exhaust studs that snapped at the y-pipe to center pipe

the following you need because they get fucked while removing,
heater hose assembly
upper rad hose assembly
funky t-stat to water pump hose assembly

and you better use either right stuff grey or caterpillar sealant, or it will leak on the road test.

all that funky shit plus a lot of unbillable time gets you a bone dry sealed rover that you can count on for EITHER 100k miles or until cylinder's 7 or 8's sleeves drop.

BUT you have an air pump, so you have to add more time to use a 'massaged' 17 mm open end wrench and 27mm wrench to get the air pies off so it doesn't add another $400 bucks to you. you have to remove the 6mm studs x4 so you can use bolts on the upper plenum.

for what it's worth, most of us just break even doing this job on an SAI motor, to keep customer's happy. all the parts we use are OES not OEM, in other words dealer cost vs. aftermarket. so for $2600 bucks you get a pretty good deal.

$2600 would be a good deal, but they are asking $4400. They quoted me $2600 for just the headgaskets job including new heads.

4400 may be a little on the high side even for me and we charge 160/hour. for that price make sure they use factory parts. if you know how to wrench i would advise you do the head gaskets on a weekend, not a hard job. the 2 things you got to wathc for is like seventy five said and watch out for secondary air pipes and the other is dont round out the head bolts in the rear.

then i would do the rear main/oil pan/cross seals/timing cover/water pump on another weekend because you have to remove the front and lower covers to do the rear main

Long block? Does it have SAI heads? Is it a 4.6?
