Oh noes! You gots to only use Factory Land Rover gaskets because Land Rover has a whole crew of little Welshmen out back making gaskets.

Factory parts are made by the low bidder.

we get OES from world pac, even the manifold bolts. we ONLY use dealer water pump, chain cover, and oil pan gaskets from dealer. the flimsy green gaskets never last like those 1/8th inch jb weld dealer gaskets. for some reason the low bidder makes the best paper gaskets!

im not defending anyone but seems that everyone has forgotten that a reseal needs to remove engine so they are charging r&r in addition to the seals and gaskets.
as far as heads they may be machining (at least).
if I was you, I would steam clean the engine to find the exact reason for the leak, I have seen many of these engines diagnosed with head gasket issues when in fact all it needed was a valley pan kit.
remember hot oil flows the the path of least resistance and coats everything in it's path, so a leak on top of the motor will flow down, the fan will spread it and the heat will help it flow, thus making a mess and unability of pinpointing the issue.
check your power steering hoses or your p/s pump, if they leak they will make a mess at the bottom.
I would get a second opinion, but first thing steam clean that engine.

I read on this forum that some shops remove the engine to do head gaskets.

no. you don't need new heads. the heads need machined, which means they get tanked, inspected, new seals, valve job, and fly cut $360.

you need parts, which off the top of my head are....

DEALER ONLY!!!!
timing chain cover gasket
water pump gasket
oil pan gasket
crux seals (rear main cross sealsx2)
front main seal
oil pickup o-ring
water pipe o-ring (little one for the lower plenum)
water pipe o-ring (bigger one for the front of the lower plenum)
valley pan gasket
valley pan end gaskets x2
valley pan end clamps x2
lower plenum/intake manifold bolts x10 short ones x2 long ones
valve cover gaskets x2
err 7371 x4
err7370 x4
spark plugs....might as well do wires while your there
upper plenum gasket
head gasket x2
14 short head bolts
6 long head bolts
err3430
6.5 liters of oil
2 gallons of coolant
throttle body heater
handfuls of hose clamps
fuel hose to replace the plastic overflow lines
exhaust manifold gasket x2
downpipe gaskets x2
new exhaust down pipe nuts
drive belt

misc time to remove down pipe studs, chase threads, and re-install
about an hour to drill and tap new threads for the front crossmember bolts x8
more time to drill out the 2 exhaust studs that snapped at the y-pipe to center pipe

the following you need because they get fucked while removing,
heater hose assembly
upper rad hose assembly
funky t-stat to water pump hose assembly

and you better use either right stuff grey or caterpillar sealant, or it will leak on the road test.

all that funky shit plus a lot of unbillable time gets you a bone dry sealed rover that you can count on for EITHER 100k miles or until cylinder's 7 or 8's sleeves drop.

BUT you have an air pump, so you have to add more time to use a 'massaged' 17 mm open end wrench and 27mm wrench to get the air pies off so it doesn't add another $400 bucks to you. you have to remove the 6mm studs x4 so you can use bolts on the upper plenum.

for what it's worth, most of us just break even doing this job on an SAI motor, to keep customer's happy. all the parts we use are OES not OEM, in other words dealer cost vs. aftermarket. so for $2600 bucks you get a pretty good deal.

One might think you have a lot of time on your hands.

Thanks to all who posted input. I think I'll take it up to MD for a second opinion. FWIW the $4400 included them taking out th whole engine and replacing all gaskets, seals, HG and the like. Not ust your standard HG job, but still alot of money...

Faster than he would do it with it in the car? I don't see how it could be possible to do it faster with it out of the car.
Duh! Cuz PT said so!

No, I had a tech who thought it went faster if he removed the engine completely.

Once you get the heads off, how much more is there to remove the block? Not that much.

That said, I don't even think of it! If I can do most of it from above, why fight with the torque converter hardware?
It is my job to give you shit. It doesn't pay much, but it is an honest living.

My guess is Roverland - only shop I know that takes the engine out and offers that reseal deal - could be wrong.

BTW - my guess is when they do get it apart it will need and oil pump and cover at that mileage so add for that. They give you reman heads - or heads that have been machined so if you want your heads look eleswhere.

Anyway just a guess -

Orignal quote was from Roverland and they did indeed say that the quote included them taking the whole engine out and inspecting everything. I called Dan at Airpark and left a message with one of his techs. Got a voicemail from him this afternoon. Will try him again on Monday.

as a shop you open your self a larger liabilty by pulling the engine just for a head gasket job.
guess who gets charged with those extra labor hrs?, the shop won't remove an engine if they dont have to.
again, do your self a favor and steam clean the engine before visiting another shop that way you will get a proper estimate. 4k seems a little excessive but not enough to cover the install of new heads.
just the new bare heads with out seats, guides, valves, seals and labor of assembly cover 50% of the total estimate.

i learned a trick from joel, pull the motor up, remove the motor mounts, and sit the motor back down on some shims between the motor mount brackets and frame (where the motor mounts bolt to). gives you room to get the head bolts against the firewall, not to mention tons of room for the coil packs and shit.

however, pulling the motor would take about as much time as it takes to drill and chase the 8 bolts holding the front cross member.
