How can a distributor be 180 out when there is an offset slot on the shaft of the distributor that has to mate with the offset cog slot inside the block? It will only fit one way. Right??????

I'm obviously very confused.

Jen,
I know you've been thru this before but you gotta find TDC on the # 1 piston and make sure your on the compression stroke and not the exhaust stroke. Then see where your rotor lines up . Should be pointing closely to the #1 cylinder on the dizzy. If not rotate the rotor 180 to fit the slot..marc
Its been awhile since I wrenched on a series ,and I may stand corrected.

Are the military engines different? It doesn't matter where I rotate the rotor to, it will still only drop in one way because of the offsets on the shaft and the dog/cog thingy. And the dog/cog thing will only fit on the drive one way so I can't rotate it either. When everything lines up and the distributor drops in the rotor faces the wing which I know is wrong. There shouldn't have been any reason for it to jump timing. :banghead:

Of course, it's pissing rain here today so maybe my temper will cool down by the time I get to work on it again.

It will only fit on the drive a certain way too. So you're saying if I take the cog out, I can rotate the engine by hand so that the cog slot will now be 180 from what it was? Hmmmm, maybe that is the trick.

An easy way to set your dizzy to 180 is to change the number 1 plug wire. So if you have number one pointing at the engine change the numbe one plug wire to the other side of the dizzy and you are now 180 out from where you were

ENGINE

_____0 (1)
(2) 0___0 (3)
_____0 (4)

say thats how you have it now

ENGINE

_____0 (4)
(3) 0___0 (2)
_____0 (1)

change it so it looks like this

So dont think of trying to move the body of the dizzy 180 instead try to move your firing order 180

It is this close <<picture my index finger and thumb REALLY close together>> to starting. I think dirty, one+ year old fuel is my issue now. It's catching for a few seconds at a time with a squirt of clean fuel down the throat. :D

This thing WILL be running this weekend. I may need to be institutionalized by then, but I am refreshed and determined.

Many thanks to Marc, Adam and an old thread from APG to figure out how to get back 180. :thanks:
