Well guys - I'm finally putting my 1991 Range Rover Hunter edition on the block well short of the 500,000 miles I had planned to put on it. You all know the truck - its a veteran of Tellico, the pig trail, Anderson Creek, MAR, SAE, Rich Mt and everywhere else the club has been for the last 12 years. Here are the specifics:

It's a 1991 Range Rover Hunter in Eastnor Green with the tan cloth interior. It has 195,000 miles on it and runs great. The Hunter was a special edition (only 405 made) that was "decontented" to allow Range Rover to have a vehicle in the under $40K price range as the County editions with all the goodies were well beyond that by 1991. It's what it doesn't have that makes it "the best stock Range Rover Classic for off-rod use" according to some guys from Land Rover of North America that I met at the first MAR I attended in 1996.

It doesn't have ABS, Power seats, sunroof, swaybars, slick leather seats, a front spoiler - a lot of the stuff that causes trouble as these cars get older. The lack of a sunroof gives you an extra 1-1/2" of headroom and eliminates a potential leak. The nmanually adjusted cloth seats are more comfortable and don't have those stupid seat switches that die regularly. There is no ABS pump to go bad either - just a nice simple 4 wheel disc brake system that you can rebuild - it does have the ventilated front rotors of the post ABS cars though.

The Hunters came with a special dog guard and unpainted alloy wheels. They were offered in four colors; green, red, white and tan.
At the MAR two years ago there were six Hunters out of the 405 built.

My truck has an NRP stainless cat-back exhaust system, specially wound 1-1/2" taller springs, frame mounted rock sliders, Hella lights, K&N air filter, Magnacore wires and 245R75-16 Goodrich Trac-edge tires (spare is brand new). The radiator was recored two years ago at 180,000 miles, The headliner was replaced a couple of years ago and I just completed the installation of a brand new heater core last month (You do NOT want to have to do this job or even worse pay someone else to do it). The Cats were replaced two years ago with a very low mileage set off a Discovery as was the fuel pump. The 10-spline rear axles were changed out for some 24 spline Discovery axles a few years ago. There is a new battery since 6-year old the Optima decided to die while I had the truck apart to repair the heater core.

The oil has been changed every 3300 miles in this truck since I bought it with 80K on the odometer in 1995. It hasn't been rusted since its been a Southern car its whole life. No wrecks except for some minor trail rash on the lower edge of the doors and rear quarters. I've maintained this car as if I expected to drive it for the next twenty years. I would like to see it go to a good home.

I'm asking $4300 because it is "Rare" (and that new heater core was such a FUN job) but am willing to entertain all offers.

Atlanta-ish
Is this a truck that most would want to keep original? In other words, would you regret swapping in a 4.6 block and not maintaining the "numbers matching" status it currently has? Would people cringe at the sight of chopped fenders with big flares where the same thing on a County would not draw a look at all? Most of the current mods sound as if it would be fairly easy to convert back to original condition.

BTW: I really like it. It's in ATL, right?

It's never going to be overvalued like a NAS defender but how much will they command over similar vintage classics in the future? Maybe they look too much like a regular RRC, or there weren't enough made to make it valuable to most collectors (other than hard-core roverheads).

I'm bored and pissed off that the Braves lost 2 today.

It's in Atlanta and the only reason it's on the market is that I bought a D-90. I have two Series trucks, a D-90 and the Range Rover so somethings gotta go....

I don't think these will ever be so valuable as to worry so much about originality in the numbers matching category but everything that's been done to the truck so far is reversible so that it could be returned to bone stock condition.

No one's interested in a Hunter edition Range Rover? There's got to be someone with discriminating taste here somewhere - oh right - this is Discoweb - excuse me for being delusional there for a minute...

Any offers? Come on guys this is a nice truck owned by a certifiable Land Rover nut (35 years of Land Rover ownership) and the veteran of many Solaros events.

yeh i know i can at RN, but that is cheapening it. sorta like saying you a going out of the country for a few weeks, when in reality you are only going to Canada.
i'd feel like a bigger tool if i did something like that.

yeh that green is nice. that and white are nice in the RRC. the fact it does not have the ABS crap and it does have a 3.9 is nice. only thing i dislike about my '88 is that weak 3.5 motor.
it should go to a good home. no reason some punk or clueless person needs to get a hold of it.

I had a 3.5 Range Rover too and I was amazed at how much difference in power there is between the two engines. I understand that the camshaft in the 3.5 is the main culprit and that putting a 3.9 cam in a 3.5 can really wake it up - but that little bit of extra displacement helps too. I know I'll miss this thing as soon as its gone but I have seven cars in the driveway right now for one driver - that's just a bit much.

Atlanta really isn't too far away, and I love the color. Too many other irons in the fire, though, to make a reasonable offer on it. I really hope you do find it a good home. It deserves to have 500k on the odo by a Rover lover....

No - I like the Borg Warner box - it's quiet and works real well for me. Anyone in the Solaros club will tell you that this truck has easily gone places with no trouble that some of the vehicles with LT230's have had trouble on. Admittedly I don't attempt some of the harder routes (tore up too much stuff when I was much younger and a bit more foolish) but the truck has done a fair amount of time on intermediate and advanced intermediate trails. I prefer to finesse stuff and refine my lines when I can - it works for me but then I've been doing this pretty regularly since the mid-sixties.

40 years of experience has got to be good for something.

I'll be driving it to the Solaros meeting at the Harp Irish Pub on Holcomb Bridge Rd just east of GA400 next Wednesday night 6/21/06 if any Atlanta area folks are interested in seeing it. Some of the club members may not recognize it with the fresh coat of wax on it (I'm not much of a polisher - pretty good mechanic - but my cars usually aren't real shiny).

After much discussion at the club meeting last night - accompanied by some ridiculously lowball offers - I've decided to lower the price on the Hunter to $3900 or highest realistic offer.

I'm trying to raise some cash to repaint my vintage 356 Porsche and buy some much needed parts for my Series IIA restoration projects so I can't give this truck away but I need to move it. Come take advantage of a rare opportunity to own one of the best Range Rovers ever made.
