You don't need a lot of fancy capability in a scanner for the D1. A popular solution that I recently adopted was to buy a quality Bluetooth OBD-2 dongle and pair it with my smartphone using the Torque Pro app. All told you're going to spend less money than for a dedicated scanner and you'll have a high degree of functionality and ability to customize the displays to meet your needs. I've been satisfied with this setup so far.

Here's a link to the same model I purchased.

There are three things in a GEMS D1 that can be accessed and to some extent controlled - engine management, ABS, and SRS (airbags).
The first can be done with ANY OBD-2 scanner, including Bluetooth ELM-327 dongles with TorquePro on your phone.
ABS can be accessed and diagnosed (but not controlled) without any special tools, using a paperclip.
I don't think you can control ABS valves or access SRS with under-$200 scanners.

I would like to have something that covers everything on my Discovery 1 w/o having to take it to a repair shop.

The recommendation I offered in my earlier post meets your needs. There might be a small number things that it can't do (like ABS), but in order to gain that marginal functionality you will spend a lot more money. Which defeats much of the purpose of doing the work yourself.

A GEMS Disco is not that complicated. Its computer is not sophisticated and you don't need a dealer-caliber computer to do 98% of the work you'd want to do yourself. Heck, with an ELM-327 dongle and an Android device you can even download RobertF's custom software to reset adaptive values yourself.

It's your money so spend it how you want to, but understand that $50 for the part I linked to and the Torque Pro app will have you covered for just about anything you'd want to do. In this case, spending more could just be diminishing returns. If you feel the $400 for iLand will give you peace of mind, then go for it.

Hi there, here is what I have noticed on my LR Disco-1 4.0 GEMS from my KawkEye Scanner:
1) P0158 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage Downstream Sensor Bank B (NOTE ALL 4 SENSORS HAVE BEEN REPLACED)
2) P0300 Misfire on Cylinder 3 (ALL NEW PLUG WIRES & PLUGGS AS WELL)
3) P1316 Misfire Causing Excess Emissions

Live Data shows the Following:
1) 02 Sensor Bank 2
0.000 Volts
Short Term Fuel
99.2%
2) 02 Sensor Bank 1
Varies from 0.005 to 0.880
Short Term Fuel
Varies from 0.0 to 2.6%

Your thought and wisdom is greatly appreciated regarding this matter and many thanks.

P.S. MILEAGE IS 385128 and all my repairs I have done myself and parts from British Pacific (aka Atlantic British, Rovers North & Rimmer Brothers in London.

Also, I have don the Full ReSet on my Check Engine Light and this keeps coming back.

Is this correct?? Just curious.
YES, and I started with 135,000 miles when I got it....and as I have stated in the beginning, I have done all of the repairs my self and the Engine, Transmission, Differential, Tranfer Case, both Drive Shafts are all OEM and NEVER replaced but properly Serviced and all of the following: British Pacific (aka Atlantic British) Rovers North & Rimmer Brothers in London are aware of this and MY wife bought this for me on my birthday back in 1998 and I have done all the Body work and Paint Job as well and I work with Fire, Police and Cert in where I live. (NOTE: SINCE IN CA WE HAVE VERY STRICT SMOG ENFORCEMENT AND THIS LRD-1 HAS PASSED WITH FLYNG COLORS AND MY SOMG TECH CAN'E BELIEVE IT AS WELL AS MY PATRS DISTRIBUTORS AS YOU CAN SEE BY THE TWO (2) PHOTOS).

As a ‘96 D1 owner you and PM give credence that properly maintained Rovers go the distance. Congrats on your efforts. You will find many knowledgeable folks on the site some of which are LR Techs and managers.

Hi Guys,

Just was reading the thread and just bought a 1996 Disco and been working on fixing some of the smaller problems like Window Washers, Lights, and stuff and tripped the SRS light. Wondering how to get it cleared. From my understanding you need to get a Hawkeye Diagnostic Tool with an adapter to clear the code which is quite expensive. Are there some other options? I'm based in San Diego, CA.

Also how do I determine if I have a GEMs vehicle. I don't have a big rectangular box in the engine bay. I have the Lucas Distributer cap.

are you sure it's a '96? 1995 was the last year North America got the trucks with Distributors.

if it has the Lucas Distributor then it is not a GEMS truck. it is what's called a 14CUX.

Cover doesn't matter - it could have been replaced by one off the 4.0 (3.9, 4.0, 4.2, GEMS 4.6 use the same intake plenum).
If you have a distributor, it should be no later than 95 model year, and use Lucas 14CUX ECU.

If it has a distributor, it is a Lucas 14CUX engine.
It is not inconceivable, albeit highly unlikely, that a late 95MY vehicle was sold as a 96. It is troublesome, however, since ALL 1996 and later vehicles are expected to be OBD-2 compliant - which a 14CUX engine is not.
I'd love to see it, though - I am in San Diego.

What are the first four characters of VIN?

SALJ. Yeah just finished up some repairs on the interior electrical switches but seemed to pop the SRS light and was trying to find which reader to get to reset. I'm up in the Poway area. Debating going to the SCLR meet up in Lake Elsinore this weekend. Looking for a Tom Woods axle.
