1996 Manual Transmission ECU

I have a 1996 DI with manual transmission. Had a problem with the ECU and local shop installed a replacement and trashed the original ECU. It did not take long for me to figure out that I now have an ECU for an automatic. Any suggestions on how to program one for manual transmission or where to get one for the manual? Thx.

Do you need to pair the ECU to the 10AS?
What is the 10AS? ECU appears to be doing what it thinks it is supposed to do. However, it clearly is telling the stepper motor how to handle an automatic. Don't know what else it may be doing wrong for a manual. PS. "1998 D1 LSE 300TDI R380, 1996 D1 SD R380 4.0" You have a 1998 with the R380? Imported? Have you had any transmission issues with your 1996 with the R380?

The 10AS unit is for central locking control and security/alarm. I was of the understanding the 10AS had to be paired with the ECU, or the ECU wouldn’t work.

I asked the question as I was concerned you would get a replacement ECU that wouldn’t work with your 10AS unit. I believe the ECUs can be reprogrammed to work without the 10AS. I would like to do that with a spare.

There are those more knowledgeable here about this and hope they will weigh in.

I converted from V8 auto to 300tdi and r380. The ecu is removed but the 10AS still manages the alarm and central locking.

My 96 only has 55,000 miles so the R380 is still solid.

My 1996 has 275K miles, all with me in the drivers seat. Replaced first clutch at 250K. I was told by a knowledgeable person just this week that there is not any linkage between the ecu and the security system. (I specifically asked that question). I don't know; but could probably find out what was done to setup the replacement ecu in mine. I have also been told that Land Rover had to replace the computer chip on the manual transmission version with a recall to address idle issues.

Hey, if you find an ecu for your 1996 R380, I need it more than you do! Please let me know if you have any contact that might help me address my issues. I have hit a lot of dead ends.

What symptoms are you talking about when you day it obviously has been replaced with an auto ECU? What is the stepper motor (IACV?) doing?

If you depress the clutch pedal in motion, revs do not drop below 1500/2000 rpm. It drops to normal 650 idle when it comes to a dead stop.

Caveat: if you ride the engine down to about 1100 and then depress clutch it also will drop to normal idle. Pumping the brake pedal will slightly raise idle. Pretty sure there are no other vacuum issues.

Could be, but there are clearly at least 2 ECU settings that indicate whether it is a manual or automatic. Also, I know there was an eprom update specifically to address issues with the 5-speed. Maybe yours has the update and mine doesn’t. Mine probably is also set for an automatic.

Straight out of junk yard truck that was AEL and auto it worked in a non-AEL and 5 speed so not sure what yours is doing

Since it was from an ael truck, the eprom probably was after the early revision. I’m still surprised it didn’t have to have the transmission settings changed. Any chance they were updated when you installed it?

No, I dont think we even updated the adaptive values, it just took the ECU and worked

I also have a 96 5speed and it was having a problem just like this. I had the adaptive values reset and it fixed the issue. I’m guessing the new computer was never reset and it doesn’t know the TPS values for your engine.

Thanks. I will try this.

I am curious about what caused your idle issues. Was your ECU replaced or was it something else? Do you know the revision level of your ECU?
