Maybe shift linkage or kick down cable adjustment1998 disco 1 v8 will not shift into 4 th gear nor will the torque converter lock up. i have changed filter and fluid.
I have the same problem and done the same thing with my 1995, and I think we are both stuffed. That's the best I've been able to figure out over the past few months. It's still great around town in 3rd gear, but highway runs take it to around 3000 rpm at 55-65.1998 disco 1 v8 will not shift into 4 th gear nor will the torque converter lock up. i have changed filter and fluid.
I hadn't thought about the gear selector in the original question. My transmission simply won't shift into 4th above 50 mph like it's supposed to, so I figure after 204,000+ miles, it probably has a clog that prevents it. I had some incriminating evidence in the pan when I changed the filter, so I knew I was on borrowed time. I was thinking maybe his problem was along those lines. I don't suppose any of those faults are fixable without dropping the transmission, maybe? From Rave (Workshop manual for a Classic, section on the 4HP22):
"SYMPTOM 9 - No 4th gear ’D’ selected
FAULT - 4th to 3rd downshift valve stuck or 3rd to 4th upshift valve stuck
FAULT - Clutch brake 4 "
X2. I would check the shift linkage. There is a YouTube video about adjusting it correctly. Then check the kd cable. Sounds like it’s too tight.Maybe shift linkage or kick down cable adjustment
