How do you tell the difference between a 2.25L and a 2.5L 4cyl? My 67 has a "newer" engine that I ran the serial numbers on and it was dated 1983 I believe. Anyway, I could have swore it was a later 5-bearing 2.25L, but I'm wondering if it's actually a 2.5L. I think the 2.5L came about in '85, but I was just looking at pics of a 2.5L and it looked very similar. Mine does have a 2-barrel Weber on it which I believe is what the 2.5L would have had (I know that somebody could have added this, but thought it was worth mentioning). It was imported from the UK in 2007.

I'm leaning towards a diesel conversion when I eventually restore it, but I'd like to understand the pedigree on it's current engine before I make any decisions.

What type of oil filter does it have? If it’s spin on it could be a 2.5 or had the spin on adapter installed. If it isn’t spin on then it’s more than likely a 2.25.
