2 Button Key FOB Not Working After Alarm/ Immobilizer Activation

I have an interesting problem on my 1998 Discovery 1

I unlocked the truck yesterday with my two button FOB, put the key in the ignition and went to start the truck as usual.

While rotating the key from I to II the electrical power in the truck suddenly went completely dead - like completely dead. I couldn’t even shift the gear lever because the shift interlock was without power.

After scratching my head, I went to test the power on the battery. When I put my voltmeter on the battery, the alarm started to go off..

Turns out the ground cable on the battery had come loose, right ans I was starting the car, and the lead of my voltmeter happened to nudge the battery cable lug so it made contact and the truck suddenly had power to triggered the alarm.

At this point, I was scrambling to get the alarm to go off by trying to start the truck, at this point it was immobilized by the alarm so while it had power the starter would not engage.

I would then close the driver door and use the fob to try to lock and unlock it but it wasn’t operating the central locking system.

Well, that didn’t work. But the alarm eventually went off, maybe after closing the door, it was pretty chaotic and embarrassing since i’m parked on the street and all my neighbors are hearing the horn / alarm going off for what seemed like an eternity!

Well I finally think to lock and unlock the central locking using the key, and that now shuts the alarm and allows me to start the car, shift into gear and drive it to my garage.

I tighten the negative cable lug and everything seems to work normally except the FOB no longer works. And I mean it doesn’t do anything, no blinking signals and no central locking.

I’m thinking somehow it is out of sync? I remember reading at some time in the past that the FOB sends out a different code each time you press it. and that this cycle of codes is somehow synchronized with the truck?

So:

- Does anybody know how to reset the FOB or do I need to go to a dealer or LR shop to reprogram it?

- Is there a tool that will allow me to reprogram the FOB

Also, before anybody suggest the steps to reprogram the single button FOB (I think a sequence of steps the owner can do) that only applies up to year 1995 and mine is the 1998.

appreciate any advice for anybody who has experienced this

CR2032 BATTERY IN THE FOB... Is It new?????

Also do the headlights work okay? Quick test of the battery, voltage isn't always the answer

They're programmed on the ECU side.. Had to dealership mine to program them, but with the correct LR programmer its possible..

1515 or 5151 not sure which, of unlocking and locking gets you past needing the FOB.. There is also a vehicle specific code for your truck, call a dealer with your VIN for it (mine didn't work and 1515 did)

Interment power TRIPS alarms and the immobilize on these.. Also something to look into is the Spider removal jumper..

Haven't had to do on my truck, and not sure what it changes?!

Try to press 4 times "lock " button. This is normal procedure. If not, you must loose ground battery terminal, check fuse 4 from main fusebox ( this will be in good shape if horn is disturbing) and two fuses from dashboard fusebox. There are 2 from them and in order to start ok it is necessary both fuses ok. Then reconnect ground and depress "lock" four times. Then, all must be ok.

Thank you both for the input.

The battery in the FOB should be fine because it’s been working great and recently replaced.

re-sync of the FOB by clicking lock 4 times didn’t work. I’ll try to disconnect the battery, leave it without power overnight and try again once it’s hooked back up

I’ll ups this post if I have any luck. Thanks again for the info.
