This was my daily driver for about two years and a “winter beater” for two years, then stored outside for 18 months. When I put a battery on it it started within 2 seconds on the first crank and runs perfectly. It has a bunch of rusty brake lines and is overall pretty shabby. Everything that normally fails on these trucks has been replaced, modified to work properly, or removed. I may just fix the brakes and keep going or if someone is building up a Land Rover p38 or something else, it would be a fantastic donor car. It actually looks quite good, and still restoreable, but why do it? Lots of expensive parts on it which would be a real “find“ for someone who needs a p38 complete drivetrain in good shape. I will sacrifice it for $3000 Canadian (firm) or fix it and keep going. You decide!
The good:
Nearly new Arnott gen 3 bags.(very expensive and transform the car)
overhauled tranny shifts and locks up like it is supposed to.
completely overhauled transfer case including bearings and chain.
Custom HD front prop shaft (balanced)
Cylinder heads overhauled and skimmed.
all new gaskets (inc head) and cylinder head bolts.
(Not “top hats” but never any indication of a problem even before cyl heads being done.. Bores hardly worn.)
nearly new plugs leads and coils.
All new bushings all the way to the panhard rod front and back
steering box adjusted and sealed
nearly new heated windshield (pilkington oem)
Alternator works great.
good glass inc headlights and one fog light.
One set p38 18” rims with 285/65/18 Toyo all seasons. Very good.
one set 16” rims (original for this model) with Cooper Mudders (old)
The bad: drives fine now but all brake lines very rusty
right front door locks itself randomly. Very annoying.
all HVAC controls disconnected and zip tied for winter ! Crude but works. No more 3 amigos Or resistor packs.
HVAC computer still in the car. Works afaik.
1/4 HP Chinese compressor for air suspension. Much better than flimsy original!
Cream/green piping and accents pretty shabby. (Except for driver seat and steering wheel, probably restoreable.
Driver’s window a little “sticky”. Works fine though.
secondary air stuff in a plastic bag in my garage.
Sunroof coded out. Probably leaks but I put tape on it.

Thanks for the welcome. I previously had a ’95 LWB Classic with the soft dash, but it turned into a rust bucket. And years ago had a ‘73 two door Rangie 3.5 4-speed. It had no computers in it, was super reliable and could be cleaned inside with a pressure washer ! You could also drive it with big boots on. Present daily driver V10 Diesel Touareg. I must be crazy!

Apologies for the thread Jack, but what's that thing like to own?

The performance specs are awesome (and they pop-up on Craigslist from time to time), but from forums it sounds like a maintenance nightmare...

Mine has 400 hp and 700 ft lb torque. It will have 500/800 next year when it gets new hybrid turbos and a re-tune. When I pull a 3 axle toy hauler (over 10 000lbs) it gets 18 mpg, which is better than what the Rangie does not towing ! If you think Land Rover have crap electronics, you have not worked on the Touareg. The transmission is encrypted! Electronics and programming are a nightmare. Passing transport trucks uphill at 120 mph with a 33 foot toy hauler on the back is a blast tough. Nothing like it for performance. Engine has to come out to do most stuff including turbos. Crazy but very cool.

A local friend has gone through 2 engines swapped by the dealer. Run far away.

Man ! Seeing what those “Classic” Rangies are going for makes me wish I hadn’t scrapped mine six years ago. It was rusty in places but not horrible. And it had the exact same stereo and GPS as the one that they are all drooling over elsewhere on the forum. Soft dash too. Wow. I think the p38 is actually a nicer drive. I will probably get booed of the forum for saying that, but there it is. I kept all the air suspension on my Rangies. Makes a world of difference. But I throw the front sway bar in the garbage.

That was k p h Autocorrect has not heard of it.

That's because the United States is one of three countries out of 192+ in the world that are still using miles. The other two are Liberia and Myanmar, so not exactly examples to which we might aspire.

I put new brake lines on the car to make it drivable so it can now be driven away. It probably needs some tlc on steering which has at least one really stiff joint. This is a fantastic donor car, especially with nearly new gen 3 bags and nearly new windshield. $3K in parts there. No sensible offer refused now. I don’t want to see these nice parts, engine and transmission go to the crusher! West of Toronto. Come and get it!

For what it is worth, I would be interested in the rear Arnott Gen 3s (fronts too if you won't sell them separately) if you do end up sending her to the great beyond. I have had a set of rear Gen 3s on backorder from Arnott since January.
