At this point they are both 15+ year old motors. What the pluses/minuses were when they came out are immaterial. What is more important is how well they were maintained over those 15+ years.

If both trucks have factory drivetrains, neither has a CDL nipple.

Were I ever to look for a D2, I would definitely pick the 2002.

I like the way they look pre face lift. Old head lights make them look more like a d1. Just my two cents. But like others said, whichever one had more maintenance done.

I have a 2003, I do not know anything about 2002. The 03 at 88k miles probably already had the head gaskets done. If not, it might be overdue.

I do not know if the three amigos are an issue on 2002 or not, but it can be an issue on 2003. That was fixed on mine a few months before the warranty expired.

Having owned both, I would say that they are basically equivalent. The 2003 is a bit more modern with minor details like gauge cluster/interior colors, headlights, front bumper, etc.

4.6 vs 4.0 doesn't really matter. They're both under-powered dogs that leak oil everywhere.
