2004 Disco, paint needs help: extensive repaint or wrap?

I bought the 04 in 2006 and it is in great condition with only 92k miles or so currently. I have addressed a number of things like permanent fix for 3 amigos (custom fix kit from Falcon works in AZ) and some useful mods for camping and travel such as dual battery, hot 12v sockets, on board air w/ reserve tank, medium lift, better drive shafts, etc.

The paint looks like shit now because unknown to me back in 2006, it apparently had a little booboo and shit touch-up air brushing on driver side doors such that now it looks like you used a rattle can but also ran out of paint before finishing.

I love this particular green, Vienna (it's the metallic light 'sage' green, not the darker versions) It also has the Aspen interior.

Considering the door jams and engine bay paint are basically fine, a respray in same color, seeing as it's the color I'd choose, makes sense but I know the $$$ of highest quality body shops in Raleigh NC or out in Seattle where it's going to be relocated. In Seattle there are a couple top notch places like Queen City and Haury's. My guess would be $6000-$9000.

A wrap was suggested, but that seems like a stopgap that could get looking pretty crappy and be more or less a total waste of $ over a 10 year span.

A road trip from NC to WA suggests it would make sense to put off such refurbishing until road trip if completed, but it will get used for trips from WA too so it's not like it's just going to be a garage queen, it's too tall anyway.

Normally I don't bother even washing cars more than a few times a year at most and my lr3 has dents and the 96 disco basically has no clear coat left but this 04 is kind of my special one, hence the idea to repaint to top spec.

Relocating on the Left Coast for a big $$$ job? Let's say.....yes.
I had a couple shops in San Jose would fix the clear coat on the roof for $1500.00, prices are probably similar to Seattle.
So use that as a guide.

6-9k seems hi, but I have not had a car painted. I just had a rear hatch painted, inside and out and it was 500 so if you do some prep yourself maybe less. If it is a truck to keep forever then just do it.

I was quoted "about $5k" to have my G4 repainted. I've been planning on getting it done for a few years. But I'm always finding other needs for the $$

Cali will always be higher due to environmental laws with regards to paint and sprays. Seattle might be similar, but I’m not familiar. You can find it cheaper in Cali, but you will need to be OK mentally in paying some you know who will be breaking laws in the Яepublik.

I've been trying to decide whether and how to address the paint on my truck. I could get just the hood and roof painted to address the growing clear coat problem, but the truth is there are dings and trail rash all over it. I was quoted $3,000-$3,500 but that seems like an unwise investment in a truck that's probably not worth a lot more than that on a good day all prettied up. Plus, I was told that the paint alone would cost ~$800 because it's red. I know little about automotive paint, but that number astounded me.

When I was in high school we did body work on our own cars and for others, which gave me the idea to check with the local community college to ask if they take vehicles from the public as lab material in the automotive refinishing program. I wrote the department head and didn't hear back.

A wrap costs just as much as a paint job, and needs to be reapplied at least every five years or so, or you're actually risking the paint during removal; especially on an old car. The stuff doesn't last forever; especially if it's not garaged.

It's not something to do if you're after saving money. It's a very expensive style statement.

For a full wrap that's worth a shit, you're looking at at least six grand; probably more, because nobody has the patterns for a Land Rover, and it will need to be a custom job, which isn't actually as good as the cut templates.

Yeah, that's what I started thinking too. It would be nice to have a proper seals and windows out, doors, off, etc repaint of same factory version. I've spent that much on less useful things but not in a while. My BMW wagon has a front fender dent that's been there since the first year I had it, 2010 LOL. Car works, dent does nothing, so I didn't bother fixing. Got hit in same spot a couple yrs later LOL. So, I felt quite smart about that choice and have left it alone ;)

$6K-$9K has got to be more than what the rig is worth. Spending that much on an old vehicle; I dunno. Another option would be to sell it, and take the proceeds, and the funds you would have spent on the re-spray, and buy something else.

I guess you are not familiar with the market for the 2004 right now, especially one with low miles and otherwise in fantastic condition. Also, "sell it" ? You missed the point which I thought was explained, this is the keeper for various reasons, when I have an LR3 that gets all the mileage. As it sits, it's worth more than most 2005-2008 LR3's with normal mileage. It's also a lot cooler vehicle in some ways. I will be keeping this one and would sell my lr3 or bmw first if needed.

I guess I really made out like a bandit on the 2004 I bought last year then. :) Even so, what I paid was at the high end for the KBB value, but still under $6K. Maybe geographical differences, I guess.

Maybe you did but I've seen them on BAT go for teens LOL I didn't say it made sense! ;) Bought mine for low 20's but that was in 2006.

Hmmm. I've been thinking about rattle canning my 90 matte NATO green because I don't particularly feel like shelling out 6k for a paint job. Anyone done this and/or have pics?

Don’t rattle can. Brush and roller look better than rattle can and aren’t that complicated. The more prep you do the better the result. I’d get a sprayer and do it that way if you have a garage or barn area separate from the house that you can utilize.

This was brush painted.

if you do rattle can, Rustoleum Almond.
