To the likely small group of you on the east coast with 200tdi motors:

I want to learn how to work with this engine as the 110 I put a deposit on in Uganda has it. I'd like to walk through a timing belt replacement and learn how to set the timing, replace the water pump, just be able to get my hands dirty and learn the layout of the motor.

If anyone near me has a 200tdi, I'll buy the timing belt kit if you'll let me tag along through the replacement. I figure it's my best shot at getting to know the process before I have to rely on the engineering of my African mechanics.

Long shot, but worth a try.

Just got done helping my friend swap a head gasket in a 300 TDI.

Ever work on a Series 4 banger? If so, then you are good to go.

http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/belt.htm Some useful info there. I never did it myself but had him do all the work on my 90 200tdi as far as conversion and mx when I lived in the UK.

Yeah, I managed to find some detailed writeups and get them bookmarked. Seems straightforward. Worst case, I get there and just have to follow one. However, I always prefer firsthand experience where possible.

I can be a moron when it comes to gasoline engines. With diesels, there's just no scooting around it - I'm ignorant. Except for the time I had to fill a fuel filter up by mouth and straw on an old MAN safari truck in Zambia so we could get out of the game reserve by dark.

The good news is, I've heard this 200tdi will be a walk in the park compared to more modern, electrified motors. I always welcome simplicity.

My brothers 200 tdi 110 needs the belt replaced and a willing assistant may be the incentive to get him to undertake the job

Saw that email, thanks Doug. I'll get in touch with you and him when I get back from Uganda in November. I'll offer to pick up the belt kit and hopefully, you'll have those 130 parts back and ready to start assembly.

definitely replace the belt. we have in the shop right now that snapped it and then they tried to pull start it. bent all but one push rod and even broke a rocker arm. despite the valves hitting the cylinder head none of them broke.

Where are you in Virginia? We have a few guys around that have gotten into the Diesel motors pretty good. I haven't done a 200 but re-built my 300.
