Well. There are some unhappy motherfuckers out there, but the good ones will do the job right. There’s a lot more guys in shops who for whatever reason don’t care at all. But I assure you I, and a bunch of mechanics I know aren’t going to do shitty work because the boss has pissed them off. Every single transaction I make is between the customer and myself. If I leave this shop I’ll be taking my customers with me.

Wasn't a shot at you.

There was a crazy bulletin to address what your describing.
There’s a bunch of things that contribute to all the violence. Control arm bushings, inner tie rod ends, some of them got steering racks and believe it or not a $1000 leather steering wheel that was weighted at the bottom of the wheel.
But they pulled that document down from the website once they figured out how stupid and expensive it was. I did it one time and they threw it out during an audit.
It really comes down to everything in the steering being tight, including the wheel bearings. Then getting the right pad and rotor combination. Never underestimate how critical the metallurgy between the pad and rotor is.

It was just a front rotor or rotors. In late December I was leaving a project site in west bumfuck AZ with water samples and I had to get them to the lab within 6 hours and the lab was 4.5 hours away but they closed in 4 hours. I made it in 3.5 hours and really cooked the brakes coming down the mountains into Phoenix. Started as a highway shudder felt in the wheel but after a few weeks it progressed to the tug-and-release you feel at slow speed braking and then a real nice shimmy on the highway. New front rotors cured it completely. Had the LCA bushings checked out and other steering components and all good. Got any of those weighted steering wheels laying around? LOL

Yeah the weighted steering wheel. What was actually funny as hell is when I produced a paper copy of the bulletin and the look on that auditors face when he realized it was some JLR engineer that was the dumbasss. I bet he looked at the repair order and said "oh I got this motherfucker" I can only guess that he figured I shotgunned all that stuff at the car.

Another LR4 newbie question: what are these steel weights hanging off the back end forward of the rear bumper, wobbling around like a pair of truck nutz? Some kind of harmonic balancers? Can they come off without repercussions? Getting ready to visit a muffler shop to have the rear resonators chopped out and would like to delete these too.

I think they’re some sort of harmonic balancer. Have read you’ve got to do a bunch of work to remove them

I think it has something to do with vibration in the chassis. You might get some drone noise at different load levels. Let us know what happens. I think your going to want to think about some alternative to those resonators. These things throw these strange fuel trim faults that usually end up being air leaks in the exhaust or a whole vehicle set of o2 sensors. Kind of going down a rabbit hole here but you can have one of those fuel trim imbalance codes picking on the right bank, but it's the left o2 that fixes it. Do you have to do emissions testing? Cause you might get a light when you cut that stuff off.

If you can modify the bumper to let the exhaust be original, that might be the optimal way.

Hmmmmm, I really just want to get the resonators and exhaust tips out of sight and not have them be the low point that may drag on rocks. Maybe I can chop them out an rotate them and weld them back in. Will have to spend some more quality time under there. The last thing I want is to start throwing codes for modifying the end of the exhaust. I do have emissions testing. Damn man...
