Delta flies direct ATL-COS (you could also fly to DEN) if you want to suffer a 12 hour drive out to Utah in a Defender. :)

I saw that. They're a little pricey, though. My homestate airline is not afraid to turn the screws on fares. Connecting through DEN or DFW might be the way to go.

And I've already thought about how to fit a weeks' worth of clothes, sleeping bag, pad and small tent into a 1610 case and small backpack.

Just get the Delta AMEX and build points for the trip. Also you get the one free check bag. Heck the card would almost pay for itself in that regards saving you $50 for checking a bag. Heck now that I think about it, I think it comes with enough points on it for a ticket.

I'm thinking about this but I think these coiler trucks might move a little faster than my old 109.

Max, a slow truck isn't an issue. We don't spend a lot of time on the highway and when we're on dirt, it's never more than 25mph or so.

Stu, DEN is just fine. I would probably be going through there anyhow.

Good to know, thanks.

Apparently Maxxis makes two more in that size, too. The Creeper Crawler and the Bighorn. 4wheelparts has the Bighorn. Not sure if you'd ever be able to find a dealer with the Creeper Crawler in that size.

Hey, by now I have already 2 dual-band HTs that I am not sure I want...
Debating with myself about relative merits of FT-817 and FT-857...

I HAD the Bighorn in that size. I emphasize HAD because they are impossible to get now. They are great tires if you can find a set. I still have a new one that was my spare. I couldn't get 4 new ones to go with it so I now have KM2's. The KM2's are not as aggressive and don't clean out as well but they are very quiet on the highway.

I'm still puttering through the study sessions on hamtestonline. I'm aiming to take the test before the holiday madness kicks off. It looks like they offer them regularly down at Georgia Tech.

My 255 KM2's are extremely quiet as well. Very surprised. And ride smooth too...

Personally, I think my KM2s are unbelievably loud. To each his own I suppose. It's a great tire but I loathe 8 hour highway drives.

Drop a diesel in that D2. Tires won't seem so loud:D

I agree with you, Kevin.
I was surprised how much louder the KM2s were compared to the old BFG MTs I had. I also had a set from a very early batch of KM2s - that were not true round, and couldn't be balanced. Ditched two of them already and replaced with two brand new KM2s - at least vibration is gone from the rear of the truck.

255/85s _may_ be quieter, though. It may also depend on the tire pressure - I suspect the tires may be a lot quieter at the pressure I don't like from handling prospective.

What tires are you running, Jason? I think that Chris has raved about yours recently.
I am running Goodyear Duratrac in 235/85r16. They are a pretty good all terrain tire. They are pretty quiet on the highway.

No complaints on the tire, other than they just don't look as cool as mud tires......
