Hi again all, I’m looking at a 2013 after a 2011 fell through (major engine issues and dumped back into auction). I’ve since narrowed my search to 2013 to keep the 5L but avoid the timing chain and guide issues. Also they Can be had with under 100k for $ 20 k or less. This one is a Lux with about 86k miles, decent service history (no HD which seems nearly impossible to find in that year). Nara Bronze.

My plan is a Pre Purchase Inspection at the Rover dealer near them and to have it shipped if all is good.

I haven’t done this quite like this before. Is there anything else I should check or ask for? I was also going to call the previous servicing dealer in TX to see if they’ll share further maintenance records. (The CarFax shows pretty consistent maintenance). I did run it through the VINDecoder website- Lux, Tan interior, Cool Cubby and Ambience are the only additional noted options.

Here’s a link to the ad- https://www.atlanticluxuryautos.com/inventory/view/13613675/2013-Land-Rover-LR4-4WD-4dr-LUX/

Side topic (sorry to hi-jack)....but why to the LR/LR4 hold their value so well? I bought my 2004 G4 edition in 2008 with 45k miles for $11k. The above is a 7 yr old car with twice the miles my D2 had for almost 2x the price. 🤷‍♂️

Because they’re better vehicles they don’t have depreciation that falls off a cliff. The 4.4 in the LR3 is bullet proof but the 5.0’s do have the potential for timing chain issues. Neither have the other characteristics of the old RV8. Paid $11k for my 04’ w/60k miles in 09’. I also think people are willing to pay for the more traditional Discovery shape as opposed to the D5.

To the OP, I think that sounds like a good route to take. I might suggest flying down and driving it back just so you can set eyes on it in person. Something that’s always helped me get more comfortable with the vehicle before actually purchasing it

Good advice. I might do that. Flights are cheap right now for sure.

I bought a 2004 with 50k? I think in 2006 or so for $25k (declined the warranty- fail). Engine failed at 100k. It was a Hertz rental so was maintained.

Spoke to the last servicing dealer. Seems it had regular oil changes, new hi pressure fuel pump, front control arms.

He also stated the timing chain issue was resolved with an updated part. (Mid 2012 and up to my understanding). If anyone knows different please let me know!

I did pretty much the same thing you are doing.....found a good candidate 2013 on the internet and had the seller take it to their local LR dealership for a PPI. Then I flew out for a test drive and drove it home. My trip was only San Diego to PHX so not too bad.

That bronze LR4 looks nice. Price and mileage aren’t bad either. For reference, I paid $26k for my 2013 with 69k miles. LUX package also plus HD package and a few other options. Unfortunately the selling used car lot knew what they had with the HD package.

Thanks @Blue i followed some of your LR4 comments and thread. It was helpful in the decision process Without a doubt. Most comps I’m finding to this one are about $2500 more with less service.

I admit that as I drove my LX to work the other day, I started worrying about reliability again, but i think with a good PPI and baselining the maintenance I should be good to go for some remote (US) travels.

What was the dealer's estimate for repair?
Sorry for the delay- I didn’t get notifications on the thread. The dealer didn’t dig in far enough to determine exact cause of leak. Then the seller offered new tires, battery, belts and an extended warranty. Practically begging me to buy it... that scared me off. I told him if he takes it back to the dealer and pays to have the needed oil leak repair completed, then we could talk. Needless to say I’m still looking.

That is a decent price. They do seem to be coming down a little. Looking for a Lux but I’ll check it out, thanks for the link!

That CPO is gold. Only another 5,000 miles on the CPO and maybe less on time (7 years on the 2013 model year) but any issues would be sorted by the dealer.

no prob! I just turned off all of my notifications and stuff from when I was looking.

I’m not sure if that one is CPO. Either way, it being at a LR dealer is good. My buddy has a LUX and I don’t miss the stuff he has that mine doesn’t except maybe the better stereo. The power steering column will be $$$ if that breaks one day.

That one is gone.

Looking into a 2013 Firenze Red Lux at Hilltop Dodge in Ada, OK. 77k miles, black pack and ambience. Waiting for CarFax / maintenance. Problem is where to get a PPI. Nearest LR dealer is 75 miles away in OK City. I’m fine with an independent shop, but is there a good one in Ada, OK. That is the question.

Depending on your level on gambling, I’d be ok if it was a one owner truck w service history intact. You might have luck calling the servicing dealer and asking about the truck.

Check the carfax. If it was traded to the selling dealer, that’s a good sign. If it was sold and bought at auction I’d want a PPI. I didn’t get a PPI on mine, but everything else lined up. One owner, service records, low miles, and it was at a BMW dealer. They’re not going to leave a POS on the lot.

try this one:

I originally wanted blue or green, but after seeing the 4 in those colors I decided I like it better in gray tones. The 3 looks better w colors, probably bc the gray cladding breaks it up. In the end, black interior was more important than exterior color for me.
