I asked a friend with an indie shop to quote me a trans service with new filter/pan. He looked up the specs and it tells him fluid is lifetime and Only recommended for heavy use vehicles. And even the only fluid change, no filter. Does that sound remotely right to anyone?

No, that is not true. The service interval for the pan/filter is 10 years or 150k miles if I remember correctly, but that is assuming pretty much only highway driving in a mild climate with no off road use. The Land Rover service schedule for arduous conditions is typically all intervals cut in half (75k miles for trans). They consider urban driving arduous. If you drive in heavy traffic often, cut the service intervals in half.

Thanks guys. I’ll let him know his parts/service database is wack.

This is the best deal I can find on pan, filter, hardware and fluids.

He’s probably using Alldata which has the factory service schedules, but they don’t always clearly outline arduous driving which is what the vast majority of people in the US do with their Land Rovers

The Magic 8 Ball says, "75K". Do not mock The Magic 8 ball. Only sorrow and regret will be your reward..
I don't own an LR4, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express.

Decided to do the tcase and diffs as well while we’re it there. Owner’s manual is pathetic re grades, quantity and intervals tho.
Diffs, I’m going with a good quality GL5 but have to bend over and go to the dealership for $60/qt on the tcase GL3.

Atlantic British sells the fluid cheaper than that and you can get a kit. The diff fluid, LRN7591, used to be super cheap through the dealership, but ever dealer has a diffferent price matrix and prices change often.

I think my specific problem is my trans is the 8speed version. I called them yesterday and they said they didn't carry it yet which I found pretty odd. I'll try them again just to be sure.

My mistake, I didn’t realize you were looking for transmission fluid. You can get the ZF branded fluid from anywhere that sells ZF parts

So, to close this loop. Picked up trans filter, pan and fluids off Amazon for $250. Used redline for diffs and broke down and bought the tcase magic sauce from the dealer. Parts/fluids $325.

I dont know if the LR4 has the same set up as the LR3 but the parts and fluid are nothing. The labour is insane. Time just to take the cross member out alone. There is a whole video series devoted just to this particular issue.

I am doing this on our LR3 at 93,000 miles and moving to the pan filter conversion kit. You may want to take a look.

Thanks. My original plan was to do this with a buddy that has done the trans/filter service on his LR3 but work-life (ha!) is not cooperating nicely so I sent the truck of a friend's shop. My understanding is the filter is redesigned and can be R&R without dealing with the crossmember.

I’ve never taken the crossmember out to do the trans pan. I take the right motor mount nut off. From the top with a long extension. Then the bolt that holds the t case to the crossmember. From here it’s a balance of how far you raise the right front and the rear of the mess. I like to do it on a drive on lift cause you could dump the truck off a 2 post lift. Because your going to be putting a lot of upward pressure on the bottom of the truck.
When you have it allat the correct height you can rotate the trans pan and slide that tube out the right side of the truck.
Without a lift I wouldn’t try it.
