200 Series Land Crusier or TRD 4Runner. If you must buy an Explorer and throw some Rover badges on it

I agree. Re badge an Explorer with Rover badging. No one will be able to tell and you can take the extra money you saved and buy a really nice D1.

The new D5 is terrible - quiet, comfortable, 21 mpg around town - 27 mpg on the highway with a range of over 500 miles on one tank of diesel (first time Land Rover has sold a diesel in the US since 1967).

I'm really enjoying mine - I just ignore the Explorer comments and try to remember that I need to fill it up every two weeks. Everyone who has ridden in it has been impressed; its a great road trip car - even better than the LR3.

My wife's Mazda 6 is quiet, comfortable, 32mpg around town - 38 on the highway... so what makes the D5 unique from the many competitors in the crossover/midsize suv segment?

Not the design..
Not power, towing capacity, payload, cargo volume, features, etc.

There's two thing that make it different: slightly better off-road capability than other segment offerings, and the status symbol badge.

People say its not possible to make boxy utilitarian vehicles like they used to...

New Jeep JL and Chevy say otherwise..

The discovery sport is a cross over. But the discovery is not. the Discovery sport is more like the Ford explorer. The Discovery is more like the Range Rover Sport.

I am not saying the D5 is terrible or a pile. I just think the “camo” package that each one comes with is very effective at making it blend in with everything else out there. Just wish it stood out a bit more.

We bought the 2016 LR4 bc I wanted another box to go along with my 90/110/D1. We've put 25K on it in just over a year. The SCV6 has a V8 feel and the mpg hwy has been impressive. With all that said its still a LR and I've had to take it in once so far to have the water pump replaced and while it was there they did an update to the SC. Took the stealership three weeks. While it was in they gave us a Velar which we put 3K miles on over the TG holiday. :)

The biggest issue is that it's a mom suv that looks like a mom car that can kind of go off-road except for those 20 inch wheels, so really it's just a mom car that could go off-road in theory. That leaves what value? How is it different?

Plus, the only people who are going to put it through its paces are the ones who buy it with 150,000mi on it, and mod it for what it was theoretically designed to do. This, after the first 2 owners mall-crawl it to death, while keeping it shiney and neglecting the maintenance. You can do that with any car, but the high dealer price makes it irresistible to people with too much disposable income who want to look like they're different, and/or rugged individuals when parked at the country/yacht club. :ack: What's a D5 gonna be worth in 40 years, compared to what a series, or Defender is worth now? Nothing, b/c it doesn't do anything to stand apart from any other suv aside of status. If the new Defender isn't a true UTILITY truck, you all realize, the only thing left is gonna be the Wrangler!? Of course I'm talking about the good ol' US; Most everywhere else, there are true UV's from several major manufacturers. The new Ford Ranger is even out there somewhere! Not a fan of that either, I'm just wondering why it's elsewhere in the world, but NOT WHERE FORD IS FROM? AND they all have affordable diesels!!! WTF?? How are there so many of us who want inexpensive, reliable utility in this country, but the only thing we can get are station wagons with soft leather seats and enough air bags to protect a snowflake??? The rant endeth here. Sorry, The Eagles lost, my overpriced washing machine doesn't work, and my socks are too loose.

If they would just fix the fucking license plate...

The poor attempt to harken back to the day of the rear mounted spare on the Disco has just confused more people than anything. Even when LR tries to draw on their 'heritage' for new models they fail on the execution.

How did you like the Velar? I haven't spent much time with them yet.

It is quick and nibble. The lightest steering I have ever experienced. BUT, I put almost 3K miles on it myself and still struggled with the blind spots when in the city. The media/nav really sucks. Touch screens required way too many back-forth touches and your eyes are off the road way too much. My kids are 25, 19 and 16 and they all said the same thing.

In the last 6 months driving around NJ/Manhattan/Brooklyn, I reckon I've been next to 30-50 of these late model Discoveries.
Say 40% have no clue what a 96 Disco is, the rest I swear avert their gaze when I look over.
On the other hand, my brother borrowed the rover to go upstate with his kids, and got pulled over by a cop
who just wanted a closer look, esp at the snorkel.
I've had waves with smiles, people have actually yelled compliments at red lights, and once, deep night in the hipsterish East Village,
a professor type yelled "nice D1!!"...just sayin.
Cars are still objects, but objects have properties in form and function, a mystique - which radiates outward.
