Yes but I can load my 88" Series IIA on a trailer and comfortably haul it to wherever I want to go off roading and get 25 mpg doing it - or haul my travel trailer to the National Parks - or do a two day 1000 mile trip to my wife's family in New York on two tanks of fuel very comfortably. It has proven to be a very useful and versatile daily driver - which is primarily what I was using my LR3 for.

I feel like they could have done all that without making the exterior so rounded and minivan-y.

What is the difficulty or downside for a manufacturer to use longer arms?

Yes, the parts bin issue, but also many engineering compromises involved. It takes effort to build a pinnacle offroad product, but that isn't in the cards when their priority is taking a softroader suv platform and making it Defender-ish enough to fool suckers forking money over to Tata. There's no pride. I hope I'm wrong, but it doesn't appear so.

That D5 seems goofy and out of place between those other two...

It may as well be a Subura, Ford Escape or some other AWD vehicle. I'm certain it's a nice car though.
Reckon OME will make HD airbags for it?

they cant grab them out of the current parts bin. Maybe Total Chaos will develop a long travel kit similar to the one avalible for the 4Runner/Taco/FJ

Why not just buy a 4Runner or Tacoma? I mean why even wade into the tooty fruity waters of the "Defender", when all you'll end up doing is re-engineering a vehicle that had no intentions of being anything other than a AWD car - literally. Because it's a Land Rover? The Defender will have more in common with a RAV4, than a 4Runner/Tacoma. Maybe they will offer SnowPeak gear as an option on the Defender.

You nerds are dreaming if you think the next gen is going to be anything other than a vehicle to pick up Winston III at the local prep school. Then possibly be used for their bi-curious "dad" to hit up local REI, to check out the latest sea kayaks and maybe brunch with Phillip, his tennis "partner".

Seriously though. The brand is dead. The latest traction control gizmoids are fine and dandy and will pop the cherries of all those urban warriors, but does little to nothing where you guys talk about driving. You can take an Outback or Tahoe places you'd never expect. So what. I prefer to support brands that have my interests in mind and actually build them. Not some frilly wanna be lifestyle brand that only has a history of what some current brands are creating. Stop living in the past fellas. She's gone and is now a transgender whore living on the streets of St. Paul.

I don't really want a Tacoma or 4Runner. You can't throw a rock without hitting one of those two, and it's not like they're running carburetors. It's not like you grab a diesel these days and get a one wire boat anchor that will never break and can be maintained with an adjustable wrench and a screwdriver.

I want what they don't let us have. In a few more years, everything new will have been neutered here.

Cheers,

Kennith

Rims are still a deal breaker. They angled that shot to avoid the pre-launch disappointment of the front end profile. It will be a nice vehicle for showing off to your neighbors that you waste money of stupid vehicle purchases or leases, but I see no point in possessing this over any other vehicle on the market besides pure want and desire.

Didn't Jeep sell out of all 4,190 Gladiator Launch Editions on the first day they were offered? They haven't even been released yet! How can Tata and JLR look at that reality and keep pushing vehicles like this to the market when they know they need to sell insane amounts of them to make the entire venture profitable? What a joke. I can't help but feel that this JLR product insists upon itself moreso than the rest.

That thing looks like a Hot wheels car.
JLR despises their past and rather forget it ever happened. They're going to insist on being "better" and "above" competing with the Wrangler all the way into bankruptcy.

They're making a car to compete with the G-class which sold 4,188 units in 2017, it's best year ever. Yes, that's 2 less than the Gladiator sold in a day. I'm sure the new Defender will sell quite a few units to Land Rover fan boys and soccer mom's, but they'll still be lucky to sell any significant number.

Land Rover keeps making the same damn vehicle over and over again. God forbid they think about putting a solid axle in a new truck.. I mean who does that? Silly Jeep and Toyota!
But seriously why not cover both sides of the SUV market? The D5, RR, Evoque for the street and mild offroad. But give the Defender at least 1 solid axle and give it a fighting chance to keep up with Jeep and Toyota.
