Back to the real topic....the Defender.

Looks like Lucky8 has prepared the new Defenders for the TReK competition finals. Look for them to break cover at the 4xFar festival next weekend.

Well... It does sound fun to drive. I'll give them that much.

That rear door still annoys the hell out of me, though.

Cheers,

Kennith

IDK, driving 100 mph down a pot filled gravel road isn't my idea of 4wheeling.

"More is better off-road, but that has a direct consequence to body roll on-road," says Cross, who concedes the more hardcore off-roaders on the team probably would have preferred a touch more travel to improve articulation in extreme off-road situations.

Isn't that why one should design a vehicle that can be easily modded, so that potential buyers can alter it to suit their needs. When you look at the luxury vs capability compromises they made they leaned heavily to the lux side.

It's certainly my idea of four wheeling; or has been, anyway. I have two speeds: Lazy and lunatic. (y)

Doesn't mean it'll hold up to that sort of driving for any length of time, or even that it will be reliable. It just means I could probably have some fun with it.

I do value road performance, as well. Land Rover has historically been very good at that, considering what they've manufactured. If I've got to live with the thing, it may as well handle decently in everyday life. Even if I'm done with gravel, it doesn't mean I'm ready to admit it yet.

Hopefully there will be some decent facility to modify the vehicle. It's hard to tell until someone starts pulling parts off.

Cheers,

Kennith

It's the same horseshit that we saw in the last two videos circulating a few weeks ago. Monster-baja-gymkana-rally whatever is all the rage these days. This really is LR's Raptor for the Hoonigan crowd.

The morons won.

This sucks but not surprising. From everything I’ve seen the D5 has less articulation than the 3/4 and the new Defender seems to the same. I’m no engineer but why couldn’t you have a taller bag at higher pressure for good on road manners and extra articulation off road

I thought I read that the 90 would offer a coil sprung option. Did I misunderstand that or is it true?

They will RoW but don’t know if it’ll come stateside. Regardless, coils eliminate the best features of the air spring Rovers. Besides being a cheap fuck I don’t know why anyone would opt for coils over air

Longevity. Actually working a few years down the road.
Air suspension works great as long as it’s not completely neglected. I’ve seen a lot more broken OME shocks lately on 90’s and D1’s than failed air struts on newer Rovers. Yes, things can go wrong over time but often they give you plenty of warning and are not a catastrophic failure (as long as you have a GAP tool...)

Looking at the pictures of the new Bronco mule, I think Ford just out defendered the new defender. A 4 door SUV with removable top and doors, a spare on the back all built on a reliable low maint chassis. I thing LR missed the mark :(

Missed the mark or made a decision to aim for a completely different target? I think Land Rover accomplished what it set out to do with the new Defender. "
too early to say. Will be interesting to see the sales figures.

It will be interesting to see the numbers across their lineup. Will the Defender bring in new customers or cannibalize from their other offerings. I just don't see anything that sets it apart from their other offerings to attract new customers. Yes it's somewhat more capable off road but that's not really saying much is it.

Without a large cargo door, I'm not seeing a massive difference between that and their other offerings at this time beyond styling.

That door is a bigger issue than people seem to think.

Any of their modern stuff is far better off road than our vehicles were when new. The Defender being slightly better isn't strictly necessary as a selling point.

Practicality needs to be better than it looks, unfortunately.

Cheers,

Kennith
