If they still made cars properly; as in, designed to be a multi-ton death machines they actually are, surrounded by others in multi-ton death machines, you'd be able to see out of the windows, and wouldn't need a camera.

My GX got the damn Toyota frame rot, so I've been shopping for a cheap snow 4x4.

Some back alley auto finance place had a '92 Landcruiser for sale with new mud tires and a pre-runner bumper for under $3k...naturally I took it for a test drive.

You can see everywhere outta that thing. Almost makes a D1 seem obstructed.

That 6 cylinder is one sloooooooow dog though...

Ah yes, nothing like sitting in an old Range Rover and seeing out in all directions including when reversing. What was the tag line - command sitting? Or something like that. The D1 is pretty decent as well.

I think it was "Command Driving Position". Silly-sounding, but it certainly spoils a person when it comes to visibility; especially when combined with the good visibility Rovers used to have in general. I won't say they were the absolute best, but they were certainly up there with the best, in that regard.

Now, some of that had to go with regulation and going for more stars. As soon as you're putting airbags in A pillars and doing a better job of rollover protection, you're going to lose some of that greenhouse. Modern styling is taking it too far, though.

Cheers,

Backup cameras are actually dangerous in some circumstances. They all blind me at night, but it looks like I can shut this one off. Of course, that will create the potential for liability, but I don't back into shit anyway. Then, there's the tendency for people to just not look anymore, and assume the camera does the job.
I hate those things. As you said, they are blinding at night, and I feel that they are more distracting when trying to back up. Ever watch someone use them? They are staring at the screen and not paying any attention to the sides of the car.

Learn to use your side mirrors like a real man. ( 😉 ) Once you do, you'll hardly ever use the rear view mirror when backing up.

Driving ambulances and backing them up has made me hardly ever use the rear view.

- I like the backup cam way better than the beepers.

- your side mirror points are valid

- backup cam is great when parallel parking... especially a beast SUV.

Bah...

I've parallel parked the Disco and a Suburban without a problem...

Even had to parallel park a extended cab Chevy 1500 on a hill (facing down), on the left side.

Practice makes perfect! ;)

At this point I've driven everything from motorcycles to tri-axles, about the only thing I haven't driven is a semi. So I'm very adapt at using side mirrors. That said I use the backup camera any time I can. I use the side mirrors also and do an old fashioned turn of the head, but yeah I like me some camera. We have a new Transit at work and it seems to have a fairly wide angle and it super imposes lines on the track you'll take as you turn. That thing is bad ass. And as someone who's spent years hooking up trailers by himself a camera was a godsend.

Ok, Good point.

that’s the best (only?) use of the back up camera - lining up the trailer hitch.
There are times I wish I had one on my truck - the getting in and out to Get just the right position is a PITA.

Now that's been mentioned, I'll have to admit that if I bought a vehicle for towing, I'd probably go for a camera. Hadn't thought of that.

If you don't tow every day, or if you tow lots of different trailers, that can be a nice feature.

I'd rather just have an aftermarket unit on a switch, though; tucked under the dash for those final few feet you can't see anyway.

Cheers,

Kennith

The most pleasant surprise I found when driving a P38 on extended loan was the side mirrors. You shift into reverse and the mirrors automatically tilt in and down to optimize your view for backing up. That was a thoughtful touch. I didn't fall in love with that vehicle but I'd happily make it the 6th Rover I add to my fleet when I win the lottery.

I installed one of those convex mirrors EE used to sell on my DII. That thing is worth it's weight in gold, and I wish I had one for every car.
