are you referring to the drive (prop) shafts or axles (halfshafts)? Either way the answer is maybe and maybe. with no locker standard axles should be fine. I have a locker and had no problems for a year but upgraded to ease my mind. If the drive shaft hold up with the lift, then they should hold up to the tires. Although if you have a defective drive shaft, expect it to blow apart 100 miles out of warranty and take out your trans. i would ditch the rotoflex with a 3" lift. so basically, the lift will cause more problem then the tires.
im running 285/65/18 approx same as 285/75/16 on a 3" RTE lift. great setup.

It's the frotn drive shafts that historically have had problems on rovers, althogh i dotn know how long the rotoflex onthe rear shaft will holdup with a lift. If your willing to put this much work into your rig, a locker would also help a lot more then just oversized tires.

heres some websites with pics, for some reason i cant load a pic from my comp on.

I'm also running the 285/75's. I originally installed this size tire with a 3" lift that netted about 2.5" after adding the winch bumper (RTE) and winch (9.5 Ti). I ended up switching to a 5" set up (netting about 4.5") to avoid some rubbing. I have a stock drivetrain and have done OK so far, although I plan on making some upgrades there at some point.

If I were to do it again, I think I'd go with the 255/85's, as this tire is nearly the same diameter, but a bit thinner for better turn in clearance. I used that size tire on my Defender felt it performed well for Southwestern US and Baja conditions.

4.5" with stock driveline??? wow, thats impressive but scary. no vibes or anything? the rotoflex isn't ripping?
I have a 3" rte and i netted just over 3" with SG winch bumper and trek rear. My 285's only rub against my radius arms, which is easily fixed by adjusting the steering stops. ther is a slight loss of turnign radius, but nothing drastic and nothing unacceptable. it still fits in the starsmucks parkign lot and turns better then my dads sierra 2500.

what 5" lift did you get? spacers? adjusted radius arms? imn debatinga 5" lift and more backspacing or 34's

No vibes or other issues to date. I had the driveline checked out by a local driveline shop awhile after the install to see if there was anything that I was missing, but he indicated that all looked good. This being said, I do plan on upgrading those components because, though they are operating OK for now, they weren't designed for that suspension set up.

I have SLS in the rear (with spacers) along with the 5" RTE front springs in the front. I'm also running Fox Emulsion 10.0 shocks. I haven't changed anything else on the suspension.

i have sls with RTE 2" spacers and tricked sensor. do you have bigger spacers or just a longer sensor bracket? I thought that would cause the bag to run with too much air pressure if the sensors were tricked more then 1". how long have you been runign this setup?

I have the 2" spacers also, but when I initially installed the 3" springs, the sensor extension created more than the desired lift so I compensated by change the arm angle. When I went to the bigger springs, I repositioned the arm to it's appropriate angle and all is well. If the airbags are running more than stock pressure than it is minimal and not at all noticeable in the ride. I've been running this set up for about 15K miles. I also have ACE.

I wouldn't mind changing to coils in the rear, except that I routinely use a hitch mounted motorcycle carrier and the SLS sure works nice for carrying that extra load, maintaining ride height and preserving what little handling I have left after the tire/suspension mods.
