Look, I understand all the negatives associated with this type conversion.

Yes I do wish I could have found a '95. This '96 is a manual and I valued obtaining the manual transmission more than the year. Looked for a manual for a looooong time.

I do know what electronic ignition is.

I did consider that the current problem may not be EFI related and that I might still have some running problems after making any changes.

Obviously I was not asking anybody to tear into their vehicle to figure out an answer. I was hoping some knowledgeable, helpful individual might know the engines well enough to have the answer at their fingertips.

Finally;
I didn't ask if it was a good idea. I asked if it could be done. It is abundantly obvious most of you all are too wrapped up in your own opinions of how things should be done.

I'm going to burn this bridge, take my toys, go home and figure it out myself.

Have fun

Hey I answered your question or at least told you how. Screw these guys. You got to have thick skin here.

This is how you post your question on dweb:
"Will a GEMS ECM operate ignition without the electrics eliminated by a carb and dizzy? I don't give a shit about your thoughts on carbs, EFI, or distributors, just answer the damn question dweb scum"

That's not a very good decision. Discoweb may be a bit rough at times, but that's one of it's greatest assets. This has been a very, very mild thread so far.

Dig around enough, and stick with your ideas, and you'll learn quite a bit, and have fun in the process. Sooner or later you'll get information you require, and many here know more about the RV8 that you'll ever need to know.

Your thread has been live for a very short period of time. Not everyone is in at the moment.

People might be more interested in why you want to do this. You may think it doesn't matter, but that's not the case. Discussions are meant to be entertaining as well as informative, and people enjoy prodding around to debate the relevance of certain modifications.

You should expect pointed opinions as well as specific answers to questions. That's fun.

If you only want information, go dig through a technical manual. They are available nearly anywhere. You can pick up a DVD that will provide all the data you require. It won't come with experience, however, and it won't come with fun.

Cheers,

Kennith

Kennith, I'm afraid you're talking to somebody who thinks ignition and EFI are separate things on a GEMS truck.

One of those "Have you built a working perpetuum mobile? Please only first-hand experience, no hearsay" requests.

My own perpetual motion machine has been nothing but trouble.

I can't turn the damned thing off, and it's been keeping me up all night.

No, you don't. If you did, you'd know how outrageous it was to even suggest this.

Then why the fuck do you want to do this?

Obviously I was not asking anybody to tear into their vehicle to figure out an answer. I was hoping some knowledgeable, helpful individual might know the engines well enough to have the answer at their fingertips.

You found those people, but your arrogance led to your having blinders that prevented you from recognizing the value of the information you were given.

What those blinders kept you from seeing also was that there some here who do know these engines well enough to answer the question. Some of these people are helpful too, but they don't go around giving guns to children though.

Of course it can be done. I know how to do many things, few of which will I share to a complete stranger on the internetz.

Don't even begin to ask Kennith or Mike Widner the things they know...

This is a great way to learn things. Just because you didn't get your way, you're gonna show us! Yeah, don't give me what I want right the fuck now, or I'll go away!

When you pull your head out of your ass and want help fixing whatever mystery condition your truck has, I'll be glad to help, up to and including ordering the parts from the UK for you.

In the meantime, I for one am still waiting to hear you tell us what is wrong with your truck. It is highly unlikely it is something that hasn't been encountered before.

If you haven't noticed by now, I used to earn my living working on these trucks and still do some work on them (those that don't belong to me, and I understand there are still a few RRCs that don't belong to me) and I import parts.

So, tell me what is wrong with your truck and I may decide to try to help you. As for your intentions to butcher this vehicle, no, I will not assist you in that misguided adventure that is sure to leave you thinking that Land Rovers are junk.

The ignition system is directly connected on a gems truck - it may run but timing will be off and the performance will suck.

So the easy answer is NO it won't work, or work with any real success.

So YES swap the front cover, cam it while you're at it to get a little more grunt and swap the dizzy from an earlier style along with a good 4 barrel manifold and carb. Or better yet a GM style aftermarket TBI set up.

Go for it. It's a ton of work and likely MUCH easier to fix whatever is wrong now. The gems system is not a bad one overall.

I'm not so sure that it won't provide spark stand-alone. Ignition timing shouldn't be affected, and it looks as though it would still support knock-prevention.

I'm now wondering if one couldn't use the GEMS to provide spark, much like the EDIS and then run a mega-squirt for injection control.

Damn you guys, making me think again!

Why, one could. You could disconnect the injectors, maybe spoof them for the ECU with resistors, and tee off all sensors' outputs to Megasquirt or something else (or, run a Holley or E-brock or AFB or Qjet).
The ECU will likely throw a fit soon - because nothing goes like it wants it to.

But why?

Hmm - good points PT.

However doesn't it use throttle angle, map sensor and rpm to determin timing?

He would be better off buying a Marks adapters and tossing a Chebby in it. Seriously.

The GEMS EMS does not (from what I can find, IIRC, Motronics might.

If it was so easy to put a Chevy engine in these trucks, we'd all have one!

It is easy in a d1.

It's no more work overall than swapping front covers, rewiring things and swapping a carb.

I should restate that. It's not that much harder to do "right".

People have way too much fear of motor swaps. It's not that bad!
But it IS one of those things that if you have to ask how to do it (to a point any way) you shouldn't be trying.

I don?t think it would work very well. Though I do think it would run. Without the other sensors hooked up, I think the ECU would give you a very conservative advance and calculate a curve that was less than ideal. If you were going that route, a separate aftermarket ignition controller is what you should use. I am really curious for your line of thinking. I would do an aftermarket EFI system before I did the old school Venturi thing. It would be cool if you let us know how it turned out if you try it.

I've learned a lot since these original posts...

I wound up pulling that 4.0, reconfiguring it for use in a Bosch management system and installing it in an '03 D2, which was totaled last year, then moved the 4.0 engine over to an '04 D2 that I'm still driving.

I purchased a conversion kit out of Australia to install a Chevy 350 into the D1 with the 5-speed manual I was originally asking about and that project is still sitting in the back of my shop.

And to all the guys I offended in the earlier posts,,,, I apologize.

This site has been an outstanding resource.

I think it would be great to re power my LWB with something cooler. I am envious that you are doing the 350 swap. I am sure it will turn out as nice as you want it to.
