I have the Bilstein 7100's with the external tank and when I was on the phone with steve he said I can clamp the towers and pass the shock through? Someone have a picture of that? Not exactly sure where to clamp to get the place where you bolt the shock on to open up so you can pass the shock through, just clamp the sides?

This is a DII, maybe a little different? Guess I will call tomorrow to clarify but I am pretty sure he said I can clamp the tower somehow to open it up and pass the shock through.

I for the life of me have not been able to do it.

I know some people say that they have but there is no way I could even come close to getting the resevoir through on mine.

I disconnected the resevoir and then recharged them after the fact.

i just had to rebuild one of mine and I did it in the tower then recharged it.

if you put the shock bolt perpendicular to the vise jaws it'll spread out the top just enough for the reservoir to go through. i didn't think it was possible but it worked. clamp it right where that weld ends before the eye mount. i put it in sideways so the res would go through with the tower clamped in the vise.

Rather than clamping mine, I just modified them slightly by grinding out a little excess metal. I didn't even think of clamping them, but I guess that would work too. The place where i ground it out is a little hard to see in the pic, but if you have the shock and the tower in your hands, just hold them together and you'll see what material you need to grind off. It's really not that much.

Yes it's a D-90, but I found some junk Disco II towers because that was what would work with the 7100's.

Not a bad suggestion, but for me the practically bolt on D2 towers were easier, so I stuck with that. I may change in the future, because it would make things easier.

Brad, that picture says it all thanks. As I don't have a huge vice in my modest garage I think I will end up doing a combination of dremel and giant C Clamp to accomplish the same thing.

I have D2 towers on a D1 and it worked fine. I pulled em' right through and clamped them to the tower. Don't bust my balls about the dirt.

I'm not liking the location of that PS reservoir :smilelol:

Yeah, I thought I'd try something new with it, since I'm on my side so much anyway I figured it would probably work better this way, lol. ;) :banghead:

Thanks for the pictures. I "attempted" to install my front shocks this past weekend but unfortunately I still don't have the right crossbar adapter. I did buy a vice and check out the trick and it works like a charm, no cutting of anything at all involved. I'm not even sure I have to relief it a bit for the hose once installed but will be another couple weeks before I am that far, again.
