94 Discovery manual transmission

I'm used to drive manual but needed to learn automatic off road with my D2. When manual i didn't never forget to put 1st when going down at severe slopes. With auto i get match4 speeds as i drive without thinking in auto lever. Trying to ascend in a rocky slope with manual is an art... with an auto is a dream...
Backlash "clonk" for manuals is mainly a drivers offset thing.

My 94 is a stick, I actually think the auto version has more pep for street driving. I don’t feel like it’s a hard manual to drive. Most of the time on the street when you are rolling at all, you can pick 1st, 2nd , or 3rd and it doesn’t care much. The people behind you probably will. Lol I thought I saw the number of imported manuals at 1500 a year in the US. I don’t know that to be true though. I think I will always have a soft spot for manual transmissions, especially in a sorts car. Paddle shifting is cool, pressing buttons on the steering wheel, not so much. But I still like the H gate set up.

I’ve owned a 96 manual and currently own a 97 manual. For the last 2o ish years word on the message boards suggested there were about 100 97 5-speeds imported. Based on the build date I daily drive what I think is the last three pedal car Land Rover ever imported to the states. I wanted to verify this and rovers north gave me the email of the Land Rover records person, but he was less than useless and it sounds like THEY don’t even know how many they shipped over. I love the bastards though. My enjoyment of driving them would drop perhaps 50% without the 5 speed. I don’t know why they included 2nd gear, it’s useless and a waste... I’ve always just gone from 1 to 3.

I've also experienced the driveline backlash on the R380 driving at low speeds off-road (in a TD5 D110). Part of it is inherent to the components, part of it is the condition of the components, and part of it is driver technique. I've also ridden in the same truck with a much better driver at the wheel and you'd think you were in a BMW automatic. The R380/LT230 combo takes more finesse to operate smoothly than other combos I've driven.

Very true. its a clutch wait a sec then in gear she goes release clutch. it makes you shift smooth. 95MY manual here. I came from a 82 toyota truck to this and had to learn all over again. More like shifting a deuce and a half.

We could start a registry, for science, like they have done with the XD/Eco trek. Thats mainly based on Facebook though.
I have a 5 speed, unfortunately not running, but hopefully will be before October

I dont hate the R380, but I put the MT82 in my D110 for a reason, it's a much better gearbox

This MT82? Or is there a different one?

MT82 Transmission Woes Lead to a Class Action Lawsuit

" Those complaints include claims that inherent defects cause the Ford MT82 transmission to slip, jerk, engage harshly, clash gears, suffer premature wear, and eventually fail. Plaintiffs claim this has led to the replacement of shift forks, shift shafts, synchronizers, and clutch assemblies, or even the entire transmission, only for them to experience the same problems all over again. I think that refers to the Mustang version of the transmission, a bit different setup. The only issue the Rover application has is the output shaft failures, which a few companies have resolved with upgraded output shaft assemblies.

@salvvia What’s the build date on your 97? I’m trying to track as many of those down as I can and find the last one LR imported (and also get a general idea of how low that number is)
