Hi,

My son stripped the steering column shaft on his 98 D1. He ordered one from A-B but it's not the correct part. It appears the correct one (ANR3171) has been discontinued. It supposedly fits a D1 or D2 but he told me it's about 1.5 inches longer than the old one. I'm in Texas and he's in Cali so I can't just go look at it. Is there some adjustment on the new one he missed? Or, do I need to find a good used one?

Sorry to hijack the thread, how do you get more room between the steering wheel, and your legs? Mine is tilted all the way up, but it seems is not enough

Try removing the diaphragm from the seat bottom. Most D1 seat diaphragms fail on their own over time. Mine, surprisingly, has not. Perhaps the previous owner was light. Without the diaphragm you'll sink a little lower into the seat and free up a bit more clearance between your legs and the bottom of the steering wheel. You may not like the change in comfort, so approach the removal with an eye to reinstallation if needed. If yours is already kaput then this approach won't work.

Thank you, I like the hi seating position more than the lack of knee room, I was hopping there was a way to tilt up the column a couple more inches

If you are taller than 5'2" keep in mind that lowering your seating position slightly will improve your forward visibility. You'll still need to watch the reflection of traffic signals off your hood to know when the light turns green, but you will have a better view down the road.
