I was working on the brake proportioning valve and needed to remove the fabric steering shaft heat shield from around the steering shaft to get better access to the valve. Lo and behold, it disintegrated when trying to remove it carefully. What's your take on needing this heat shield. I know there is the rubber donut on the steering shaft to look out for but what has been your experience without the heat shield? I'm really thinking i need to source a replacement but want to know if i can do without it with no bad effects in the long term. This is a daily driver....Thanks!

Mine was missing on the RRC - luckily I noticed during the TDI install as the rubber was charred and brittle from heat cycles. So..... For what it's worth I'd install something there to help shield it.
