A friend stopped by with this today. I drooled. A bit.

Back in the USA; Rockwood, PA
Cummins would be at the very top of list, well above an LS variant.
Why?
Fuel mileage?
Horse power?
Towing?
Maintenance?
Parts availability?
Available accessories?
Total project costs?

After having a 110 with an International HS 2.8 turbo diesel while in Brazil and numerous Rovers with V8s (3.9, 4.0, RPI 4.6) there are + and - to each of them.

We did many long off road trips while in So. America with the 110 and a diesel fit well with range, fuel availability, ease of maintenance, and common parts.

In the US, I’ll take the RPI 4.6 in the Rangie as those advantages are not as important here.

However, how one uses the Rover is an important criteria as well.

FWIW, if I wanted the best overall repower with cost being a major consideration, I would go with one of the Chevy inline six engines and Robert Davis’ conversion parts. Those inline sixes are incredibly durable, fuel economy pretty decent, and give a good combination of power. Parts are everywhere and they are dirt cheap.

Actually, I wish I could build one of each. However, if I could afford that I’d probably not be someone with that skill set. 😊

If you say his name 3 times he'll show up and start trying to sell them here

Yep one of ours. Finishing another now that has ac, webasto, and complete new wiring looms from Autosparks. We use new transmissions and tcase on these.

Kennith, you're tripping if you think your rover v8 is putting out 310 ft lbs of torque.

Torque is the relevant number, not hp. We drove two 90's to the ralley in Ouray in July. The Cummins truck buried the Speedo and got twice the economy of the v8 truck that struggled to keep up. Cummins truck pulled I70 up to the Eisenhower in 5th gear. V8 90 had to drop to 3rd .

The Cummins is a modern high output engine. More power than a rover 4.6 with a cam.
For context, our f350 powerstroke dually tow rig puts out 570 foot lbs of torque. The little
Cummins (not even half the displacement) is putting out 310. Off road the Cummins has an antistall feature so it just idles up an over in a rock garden. One of the trucks we built did the Rubicon last summer and the owner loved the antistall for that run.

No comparison to the navistar 2.8, tdi's, or rover v8's. Our trail rig is a 4.0 gems 5spd 90 with fresh heads and runs strong. Can't keep up with a cummins, even in a heavier 110.
Even @70 mph if you accelerate you get pushed back in your seat.

Efff a Chevy dump truck motor in a defender. Have ridden in Roberts and came away unimpressed.

Thanks for posting that Doug. I’ve been driving my VW Tdi since 2003 and still love it, but had all but written-off diesels due to current emissions regulations. It’s interesting to see modern, real world power output comparison. The only experience I have is with LR V8’s (won’t bother with the 2.25p) The 4.0 in my D1 was a dog, but the 4.2 in my LWB is pretty nice.

Yep, that Cummins 2.8 is as good as it gets all around, IMHO. Unlike Doug, I haven’t driven one of Roberts conversions but have had 2 chevys with manual trans and the inline 6 cylinder. I was always pleased with how they drove and with reliability. For the budget constrained, it seems like a good option to me. I have driven a number of vehicles a lot larger than a 110 with the Cummins 4 cylinder. It is the total package.

I have a GMC Canyon with a modern 4 cylinder Duramax diesel. It is in a totally different class than the 300TDI, incomparable. It is in the same ballpark as the Cummins 4 cylinder. The only thing I don’t like about the Canyon is the emissions and no manual trans option. Delete tuning solves the emissions problems but is illegal... kinda like putting a 300TDI in a D1.

I didn't say it was. It's supposed to have about 250 lb/ft, which places it well out of competition.

That's why I said it's like an exaggerated RV8; and I find that interesting.

Buick V8 engines tend to lean quite a bit toward the diesel side of performance and power ratios; and their weakest offering is no different.

Cheers,

Kennith

Honestly, a crate 2.8 will outlive me, cover all the basics and be more reliable, so it seems like a strong choice if you have the $$$.

The only things that Rover still needs is a full 5-gallon gas can and a match.

Whoa dude great fucking post. You know, that rover ain't my cup of tea, but neither is the rover in the OP's post. But I can appreciate them for what they are. Somebody put a lot of fucking work into them and kudos for a job well done.

Myself, maybe something more like these.

You dont have to appreciate garbage vehicles because they took a lot of work, a lot of effort went into designing the pontiac aztek. That Overfinch and every Kahn truck is pretty much offensive to the eyes.
