Yes, the code is 114 Shuttle Valve Electrical Failure. I just had my ABS Amigo 2 days ago. The amigo is a HARD one. The 3 annoying guys are ALWAYS there, not intermittently.

I also bought the same trailer connector. The only difference is I haven't soldered but just tied up the copper wires because my soldering thing is not working. Another thing I suspect is the ground. I clipped it to the metal holder of the steering reservoir instead of the bolt in the write-up. It's because the bolt head is rusted and rounded.

Is there any electrical test I can perform WITHOUT TAKING OUT THE SHUTTLE VALVE again? It is a pain of removing the 3 screws. :)

Hmm?. a couple more questions: Did you use the ABS amigo to clear the codes after the repair? (I hope this isn?t a dumb question.) If not and it is logged as a ?hard? fault, then the amigos will appear until it?s cleared.

The metal holder of the steering fluid reservoir is painted, as I recall, and unless you get down to bare metal, you won?t have a complete ground. You can use your multi-meter (I assume you have one and tested the shuttle valve switches while they were out to make sure they are within spec) to find a good ground by connecting red lead to live + battery 12v and then test for a completed circuit with the black lead to a potential ground point. According to Josh, write-up author, any ground will theoretically work.

Since the SLABS computer is monitoring electrical resistance, I think soldering is important to make sure you have a good solid connection that doesn?t affect resistance.

I don?t think there is anyway to test the shuttle valve switches without removing them; you need to hold each one then both down to simulate their function while measuring resistance.

1. Your guess is right. I did the fix FIRST because my friend's OBDII tool threw the "Shuttle Valve Electrical Failure" error. After the fix I turned the key and the 3 amigos were still there. That's why I order the ABS Amigo. The result matches the OBDII's....unfortunately.

2. Thanks for the way to test ground. I will try that on Sat.

3. For testing the switches, I think you mean the test after I take out the shuttle valve and press on the 2 solenoids, right? Yes, I did that test and got the reading identical to the write-up. This test got perfect result even the wires are NOT soldered together.

Thus I still think it is the problem of grounding.
Thanks anyway, DWB.

Thanks for your comments -contrary and divergent points of view always help sharpen the focus in a discussion.

Before I decided to try this fix I was careful to make sure I completely understood how it worked, especially since it does deal with key safety equipment ? braking. After some research I realized it is simply re-routing a bad internal monitoring connection in the ABS unit (probably defective and deserved a recall), thereby restoring normal functionality to the computerized system. My decision to try it was in fact based upon safety-- by restoring and making reliable one of most important safety feature of any modern automobile- the ABS system. So I would argue that the fix is a safer option than doing nothing and leaving the amigos to come and go unpredictably, and maybe at one of those unpredictable times in a crisis when you need the ABS working!

Now JohnB, if you can offer a specific reason from an electrical or engineering stand point why this fix somehow compromises the braking system, then that would be an important contribution indeed.

This repair is not a trick for extinguishing the three amigos. It bypasses two areas in the circuit that can go bad;

The pins on the board
1. http://picasaweb.google.com/jycsalas/ForumPics#5402595637490793698

and the holes on the internal board. Notice the oxidation from my 03.
2. http://picasaweb.google.com/jycsalas/ForumPics#5402595632257332978

If the circuit is bad at any of these two points, or your shuttle valves are leaking brake fluid onto the SVS, then you get the 114 code.

The bypass is how I believe the circuit should have been engineered at WABCO. I have had NOT a single visit from the amigos since MY repair back in November. A few times a month when it rains I test my ABS, and when off roading my TC and HDC work flawlessly.

I pitty the fool who reads this repair and kills himself or his occupants by not doing it. Especially with almost 100% success rate from everyone who has done it STEP by STEP.

There are many other things that can be done or NOT done that makes are vehicles more dangerous to the average driver; this is just like adding bumpers or roof racks or suspension. If the product is not of good quality or if installation is incorrect then the mod is worthless

This is at least one thing that may help you stop in time.

Hi DWB, just want to say thank you for leading me to the test of ground. The metal holder of the steering fluid reservoir is not a good one. It does ground but not as perfect as the one Josh (and you) is using. So I spent some time to clean the rust on that bolt and connect to it. The TC and HDC lights go off first. Then start the truck again the ABS goes off too. YEAH !!!

Hi Josh, paranoid people are everywhere. You are definitely the King!!!

Ah.... sweet success. Congrats. Unless you've had the three amigos plaguing you, you really can't appreciate how nice it is to be rid of them and have the damn ABS fixed.

Hail the King...

X3 I vanquished the 3 Amigos before Christmas and in the snow / ice of the last few weeks in UK all systems have worked fine. I did cheat by getting the work done by my local LR expert (a fix he recomends) while other work was being done.

Congratulations! Nothing wrong with having a mechanic do the work. It?s has to be a whole lot cheaper than say $2000 plus for new ABS modulator, which many professionals have wanted to do to solve the problem. My fix cost $1.19 for the plug (I already had some solder and shrink tube) and took about 1 ? hours.

Another trio bites the dust!

To deal with the three amigos on my '99 DII, I'm about to attempt the repair in this write-up to "rewire" the ABS shuttle valves, and wondered if anyone has tried it here, and if so, how it worked out?

http://www.landroverclubvi.com/abs-mod.html

I pulled the SLABS fault code(s) and the only one was "Shuttle Valve Electrical Failure." I figure it's worth a try?
tis link is no longer available do you have the procedure on video you can send me?

Yes-- I found a copy of it on my computer, a pdf file of the original web pages. PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

I did this mod to my 03 about 4 years ago, but I did something with the shutter valve and a trailer harness. Do you have that part of the write up?

I have an 04 now that needs the mod

I cant find the link to do this repair. how exactly do you connect the yellow wire to the green and yellow on the black plug? I keep seeing trailer connector but cant find a picture of the one that everyone is using. thanks for the help.
